My friend's family had Windows 3.1 until 1998. It's hard to describe computing in the late 80's and early 90's to the younger generations unless they can envision a time when computers were optional to most people.

I was born lower-middle class in 1994, so while my parents could afford a computer (Windows 95/2000; can't remember which) and games and I was aware of the more specialized hardware, we never got the fancy stuff. Not that the kiddie games and ports of Sonic I played and enjoyed would have needed them anyway. And I was too young for the whole "murder simulator" stereotype and "gamers are mass shooters in waiting" idea to be stuck in my head.
