“So what was all that? I thought he picked you specifically to keep me from getting caught?” I demand.

“He threw a Squirtle at you,” she says as she goes about helping me put the harness back in. “And I was clearly right to not feel like I needed to interfere.”

“But you didn’t need to practically throw me at his path to force me to fight him.”

“Yeah, well I thought it would be amusing to test whether or not the fact that you would end up spreading it was true or just a means to try and get you to avoid people,” she says and I turn to look at the kid now staring at the moon. It’s an interesting thing that I don’t really feel any particular sensation about it beyond it being the trigger. “Besides, I had everything under control. The limitations explicitly state that you only become locked if you are captured or conceive an egg. The kid was far too young to try and get an egg from you, so really the only thing I actually had to do is keep any pokeballs from hitting you.”
