Canon wise she is supposed to be an ex-human. She is from the setting's USA analog with all the baggage that comes with it. She sort of sees beign trapped within the manatear as a "Hey, socially dead, but I escaped my student debt. :') "

Yeah she is mostly looking for the upsides to being trapped in the manatear while already on the far side of it happening. She probably knows she is retroactively justifying it.
