You can trace the gentle curves on both the outside and inside of my Breedlove Pursuit’s body. The color of the bronze strings is nearly matched by the copper dot inlays on the fretboard. Look closely and you can see the reflection of the strings reflected in the glossy finish of the body and sound hole rosette. The tortoise shell of the rosette is subtle: very dark with only a few flecks of deep red, making it the perfect accent on this guitar. That’s the opinion of a guy who generally loathes the tortoise shell look on guitars.

The dot inlays are copper? Neat! The flamey figuring in this guitar's top is exquisite; I love figured wood.
I agree that tortoise shell can look gaudy if it isn't done right, but it can be beautifully subtle (good descriptor) when it is.
Gretsch used a firestripe tortoise shell plastic for the binding on their natural-finish Synchromatic archtop guitars in the early 1940s. It was, admittedly, a tad garish compared to the usual ivory-coloured binding, but it had a most compelling visual effect on those Gretsch guitars, especially when combined with their streamlined "cat's eye" soundholes.

The dot inlays and (as we'll see in my next post) the tuning machines are also copper.
This is the only guitar I own with tortoise shell appointments of any kind. My tan breadwinner originally had a red tortoise shell pickguard and truss rod cover. I replaced those with black pearl and am much happier even if it is no longer original.
