Fane is a very gentle guy, soft spoken and not one to act out when he's upset. But like most shapeshifting humans he's still subject to "Intrusive Instincts" which are sudden animal-like urges that are difficult to suppress. So when Fane's heart rate rises, and his fight or flight instinct kicks in, he will become more spider-like.
In this case he was scared so he assumed a tarantula-like threat posture and started producing venom in his fangs. Luckily the venom he has in this form lacks digestive enzymes, so it can't melt a creature's flesh or insides, but it does have a powerful neurotoxin that can paralyze a full grown man for a few minutes.
In full spider form his venom has both the enzymes and neurotoxin, but he's too small to do any real damage to a human. Being bitten by little spider Fane would just feel like a nasty bee sting and make the afflicted body part go numb for a while.
Needless to say Fane does not want to bite anybody if he can help it.
