Amanda takes a momentary rest during training. She doesn't let her guard down for a moment, especially not in a time of war. Soon she'll be back out fighting dissenters, aliens, felkin and who knows what else in the name of her government and the Absolvers.
The uniform she's wearing here is typical of female Absolvers-the back is open to reveal the brand permanently seared into her skin; which marks her as an Absolver...AKA government property. (Males have open-back uniforms as well to display the brand; they just have short-pants or body suits instead of leotards. The brand is sort of like a police badge or ID card where she's from). As government property, she is basically a slave...but her world is changing. The president of the AUS (American Union Of States) was recently revealed to have secretly been a super (super-powered individual), which is highly illegal (supers are considered government property from birth and are barred from things like owning property and taking office). This caused the AUS to fracture into two warring governments, with most of the world powers sending their own supers to get involved in proxy fighting to try to influence the outcome. Many of her fellow supers picked a side in the conflict; a position that Amanda does not personally support. She prefers to follow her contract to the letter and continue serving the government agency that owns her, letting them call the shots. Anything less then that would mean a sentence of death. Unfortunately, blind trust in her superiors and their cause may bring about this outcome anyways, even if she survives the conflict-the government does not have any trust at all in its super-powered slaves.
Saw a YCH that just screamed "Amanda" to me, so here we are. I got in on the YCH before I discovered the artist is Russian. I admit I was conflicted about it, but since I had already committed to my interest in the art I decided to go ahead and go through with it, since backing out would have been rude. War is brutal and horrific, and nothing to make light of, especially when it's not fiction. I understand that a lot of Russians don't support the war, but as I'm writing this it's past day 100 of the conflict and pretty clear they aren't doing enough as a people to stop the genocide. So I'm not sure if I can continue to support Russian furs going forward. How do you all feel about it? What's your take?
As for Amanda...as shit as the world is right now with current and future likely global conflicts brewing...Her backstory was originally intended to be a kind of Orwellian satire of current American socio-political attitudes. I started with the idea that superheroes in her world are just seen and used as tools by the people who run things. She's been kind of brainwashed into thinking that her position as an Absolver means something, and that she's doing good in the world, but in reality she's just a weapon that can be spent and discarded once it stops working. Her superiors don't care about "the mission" in the same way she does, even though they pretend to; In the same way they don't care about her even though they provide for her and keep her in good condition. I'm sure you can find less extreme examples of a disenfranchised minority being treated similarly in the real world United States. At any rate, it was an interesting exercise in world-building.
