Usually it's a combo of art commissions (nobody knows your a doll on the internet!), selling on various parts of dolls that they dont use( ooo love this models legs but am not a big fan of the head.. let's see if anyone on DOA is up for a split!), and general thievery from rich jerks( shrinking powers and whose gonna believe that a haunted doll stole your jewelry case huh?).
Plus they dont have an extremely high cost of living anyways what with not needing food and such... generally they just mooch around! Sometimes they have "owners" and sometimes they just hole up in an attic somewhere and make little magpie dens of shiny things.
