Fall, 1341
*Hearesecha of Mount Dana. I am Kharriana of Behran Island. I call you in your territory and that of your mate to pay my respects and courteously request an audience. I present an offering of this island stag from my own lands.*
The green dragon was standing just outside of the black dragon’s territory with wings open and a large stag at her feet as she made the announcement with Hearesecha’s arrival. Kharriana pushed the deer forward with her snout, then stood defiantly as the black dragon cautiously approached, sniffed the green and the meal, before finally nodding.
*I, Hearesecha do acknowledge this offering from Kharriana, welcome her to my and Wefwesm’s territory and agree to an audience. How can I be of help to you?*
The green dragon breathed a sigh of relief as the black dragon took the offering and began supper.
*What can you tell me about Meratezatgh?* Kharriana asked.
*The Lord of the Southern Ranges?* Hearesecha laughed. *You are ambitious, Green.*
Kharriana snorted. *You know him better than that, Black. We were both at Mier’s Forest. We were both at the Field of Fire. I saw that fire in him and you cannot be blind.*
Hearesecha stopped eating and nodded. *Yes. And I was with Mera when he freed the Jutrstra from the clutches of the Other Men. He has a certain energy about him. And he is kind and cunning and resourceful and has useful allies.*
Kharriana frowned. *Right. He loves those humans of his.*
*Understandable in a way. You know he was captured as a young whelp and then rescued and raised among the humans until he escaped right?*
*Yes, the Lord Feral. Not thrilled about that, but I think I could live with it.*
Hearesecha shook her head. * ‘The Feral’. Heavens, what fools we were. Regardless, his humans proved their worth to him-and all of us- during the war. I can respect that.*
*It’s been a decade since the Great War. And Meratezatgh is still a bachelor?*
*Well, he tried doing the mating dance with me a few years back, but I turned him down. As far as I can tell Mera’s not tried with anyone else.*
*You were never attracted to him?*
*Mera has his charms, but he’s also kinda…* Hearesecha searched for words before settling on: *...quirky*
*Trust me. For a dragon lord that plays with humans, that is an understatement.*
The black dragon shook her head. *Now, not just that, Kharriana of Behran Island. I’ve known him, and fought under him before his fame. You’ve never met him before Thergamorth died.*
*That’s why I’m here. I respect that fact.* The green dragon insisted.
*Do you love him?* Hearesecha cut straight to the point.
Kharraina paused. *I think he has some things to him that are attractive to me.* She finally replied. *We ran into each other recently, and it reminded me that Meratezatgh still has the assertiveness and sense of honor that first attracted my attention. Plus he has that sweetness in him.*
*Well, Mera was very shy. He spent much of his time playing with his humans. Thergamorth was the only dragon the bronze really was close to, so Miers Forest changed him. Meratezatgh got angrier. Bitter. Perhaps more assertive as well.*
*Everyone changes with their experience.*
*Everyone does. All things considered, Lord Meratezatgh of the Southern Ranges is not a bad potential mate. Perhaps I was weighed down by our mutual history.* Hearesecha briefly seemed lost in thought. Then she turned back to the green dragon.
*Oh also he’s a little clueless about romance.*
*Oh? Is he not interested? Does he like males?*
*I don’t know-I don’t think so- but that’s not what I meant. He just doesn’t pick up romantic cues very well.*
*Oh…*
*You’ll probably have to smack him with a rock to get him to recognize your interest.*
Kharriana laughed. *I guess I can live with that. A cunning, versatile war hero dragon lord, who’s also a human lover and a social nitwit. A brilliant dum dum.*
Hearesecha laughed as well. *Haha. Be careful if you’re planning on having hatchlings with him.*
*Yes. Our dum dum hatchlings.*
Kharriana suddenly stopped.
*I thank you for all your advice, Hearesecha of Mount Dana.* The green dragon announced, and abruptly turned to leave.
*Anytime, Kharriana of Behran Island.* The black dragon called back to her, returning to the stag supper. *Anytime. I hope to see you as a neighbor one of these days.*
