A plan had been hatched.
Early in his quest, WulfBane was struck by a Curse of Continuous Consumption and was persistently motivated to keep eating. But he pushed his way through and even after an encounter with a gelatinous cube destroyed much of his gear, he continued on.
But it seemed that that same gelatinous cube that he was compelled to devour had altered his curse. While the hunger still persisted, it seemed that the rotund hero was now able to summon forth food of his own.
It was time to turn his burden into a boon!
Still new to the use of magics, WulfBane knew he still needed to be careful with what he did next. Still from behind a shelter of stone, WulfBane shouted out to his foe. “Hey dragon! We seemed to have started off on a wrong foot and blew past introductions. I never quite caught your name? I’m WulfBane.”
The massively muscled dragon paused with a brief moment of confusion. “What a strange tactic. OK, I’ll play your little game Sir WulfBane. You may call me Borruhn. While you still breath that is.” Borruhn gives a smokey snort of laughter. “Although in your shape, I don’t expect it to be too much longer. But I’m sure you’ll make a nice meal after we finish our little parley.”
The dragon played right into the champion’s hands and the wolf was ready to pounce, metaphorically. Stepping from out of his shelter, “oh, a meal you say. Yeah, I’ll admit I’ve grown to be a bit indulgent as of late. I do enjoy myself a nice steak from time to time.” With that, WulfBane concentrated with all his might on summoning a platter of steaks. “I might be willing to share.” The obese canine fought his own hunger to offer his bounty to Borruhn.
WulfBane jumped and nearly dropped the plate as a thin jet of flame was sent his way. Fortunately he wasn’t as swift as he once was and soon found that Borruhn’s target was the meat itself. Taking one of the slabs of meat in his claw, the dragon tossed it in his mouth and give an approving not. “Rare with just the right amount of sear to lock in the juices. I’m actually quite the accomplished roast-master myself. You should try one before we resume the inevitable.” The dragon takes the rest of the steaks save one for his canine companion.
He was right. One bite into the charred beef and WulfBane was amazed at the flavor and juices. “You know, we don’t really have to fight. At least not right away. We can sit and talk it out while we share a meal. You know. Let’s get to know each other and perhaps become friends for a moment.” Borruhn cocked an eyebrow at that. “Before we resume to be enemies of course,” WulfBane added, eliciting a chuckle from his new draconic friend.
And with that, the two chatted while WulfBane continued to summon forth various meats and delectables. Early conversations focused on their common interest in food and comparing their preferences. But as they got more comfortable with each other, topics progressed to their various pasts and eventually the story of why WulfBane came here, how he got cursed, and how he could conjure the feast they’ve been enjoying.
Fearing this would be the point the talking would stop and the fighting resumed, WulfBane was reassessing the battlefield. But they were both so enraptured with their chatter and especially their meal that they both failed to realize just how much bulk the two of them had built up over the past handful of hours. WulfBane had bloated up to the point he was firmly planted by his tremendous layers of fat. And an inspection of Borruhn showed he was in a similarly rotund position. “You know, I really just vowed to make sure you were no longer a threat to the populous. You’re not really that bad of a guy and I bet you would be a great addition to the kingdom. Share some cooking ideas and that.”
Borruhn’s face turned to one of offense. “How dare this lowly wolf think he knows what’s best for a mighty dragon.” A tense stare emanated from the fattened scaled face while the eyes of the wolf widened. “Ha! You should have seen the look on your face! I would love to join you. Once we can get a bit more, uh, mobile. Now hand me another turkey.”
Proof that the quickest way to a dragon’s heart is through his stomach.
And with that, the dragon
Final is satiated and no longer a threat to the kingdom. Three cheers for creative solutions and to new friendships.
