Castaway Jaws [October 21st 2021]
Spurred on by the positive reception of The Top Hat "Replica", I decided to squeeze in one more ambitious piece of artwork before I had to move on to Issue #3 of the SPCM comic. In this case, I was inspired by a magazine cover I'd recently seen, for the April 1960 issue of Galaxy magazine. This cover showed a lady spacefarer in a similar predicament and state of undress, and this gave me the idea to draw Captain Jaws MacTaggart in such a position.
The piece evolved organically from that stimulus, with more ideas coming to me at the spur of the moment. Things like Jaws' discarded clothes, the pirate flag flying from one of the palm trees, and the wrecked spacecraft half-buried in the sand (this craft is known as the Captain America, and had previously appeared in Issue #1 of the comic).
I'm still pretty proud of how this piece came out, and I've always wanted to further explore this idea of Jaws getting stranded on an uninhabited tropical planet. Maybe I might do another drawing based on this theme, or even use it as the basis for a comic of some kind? Nothing's set in stone at time of writing, but as they say, watch this space...
