This is a review I decided to have a go at doing starring an old cartoon that some people probably will know.
So sit back while I proceed to present you all with a far out review on Space Goofs!
Space Goofs (originally called Home To Rent and known as Le Zinzins De L'Espace in its country of origin) was a French cartoon that made its first appearance on TV on September 12th, 1997 and ended its production of new episodes on the 12th of May, 2006, lasting two seasons. The show was created by the late Jean-Yves Raimbaud, produced by Gaumont Multimedia and Xilam Animation and directed by Thomas Szabó and the late Olivier Jean-Marie who you may recognise as the creators of several major cartoons, specifically Zig and Sharko, or mostly, Oggy And The Cockroaches.
The plot to the show is about these five (or four depending on which season you watch) guys that come from the planet Zigma B who end up crashing their spaceship into an asteroid and crash on Earth where they hide inside an empty house. It's a subtle refuge for them but the problem is that there is always someone moving into the house which stalls their attempts to build a ship that'll take them home until they can find a way to make the tenant leave without them realising that there are actual aliens inside the house. Fortunately, they have a handy machine called the S.M.T.V that transforms them into things to help them blend in, adapt to certain situations or influence the tenant into leaving.
Every episode usually ends with the same results, they get rid of the tenant, but they wind up losing the ship from it either being destroyed or taken by the tenant.
Now we come to our characters-
First we have Etno, the purple one. He is the considerably intelligent one always leading the fellas and attempting to build a spaceship that will successfully take everyone home again. He is always inventing and his super smart, fast-paced, scientist style talk was provided by Maurice LaMarche.
Then you got Candy Hector Caramella, the green, big headed chap wearing a polka dot apron. Candy is a total freak when it comes to cleanliness and he can be pretty pushy and uptight about it, too. He was also identified as non binary in an affirmed interview with one of Xilam's animators, Marc Du Pontavice.
Candy was also identified as homosexual so there would be that occasional moment in an episode where he would flirt with another guy. He would usually use more feminine disguises in the cartoon and would even show a feminine side a lot. This did cause his gender to be changed in Latin-Spanish dubs. He was voiced by Charlie Adler who gave him a very fancy English accent.
Up next, Gorgious Klatoo. Even though his name is meant to be pronounced as gorgeous, there is nothing gorgeous about this big, blue, gorilla shaped fella with the heart shaped nose. Gorgious is the both the big bully and the big glutton of the bunch, he's always cranky and miserable, but it doesn't stop him from stuffing his face with loads of grub and picking on things that are smaller than him. He was voiced by the talented Danny Mann and was sometimes voiced by Michael Sicoly in the first season.
The next character we have is Bud Budiovitch. You can easily tell what Bud is like from his bloodshot eyes and his lanky, orange body; he's a lazy TV lover. There is nothing Bud loves doing more than just sitting down in a chair and enjoying sodas and watching TV.
Because of this laid back nature, Bud is one of the last characters alongside Etno to panic and sometimes, he'll even come up with a great idea to solve a problem, but will mostly just get ignored.
Bud was originally voiced in season 1 by Jeff Bennet, but the baton would be passed to Louis Garneau in the second season onwards.
Last but not least, Stereo Monovici. This red, two-headed chap (or chaps) was a talkative bookworm. Sometimes, his two heads would often scuffle about things like their knowledge, or decisions. Because of his two heads, Stereo was smart like Etno but he (or they) would waste the information he (or they've) known on useless information. He was voiced by Jeff Bennet like bud in season 1.
Stereo was phased out of season 2 due to negative feedback from the viewers and Xilam declaring his personality was "too weak", thus removing Stereo from the show's main cast in the second season, but he still made a couple appearances in two episodes.
I can assume there is an explanation in the show's continuity for why Stereo was phased out of season 2.
My theory is sometime after season 1 and before season 2, Etno builds another spaceship and Stereo gets handpicked to test it and it actually works, but before the others can get aboard, Stereo's heads argue and end up hitting the blast off lever and ends up shooting off into space.
Thus, that's why Stereo was phased out of the second season.
The show had about 52 episodes (100 segments) in total.
I remember watching reran episodes from the show's second season early in the morning on Nick Toons back when I was 9 and enjoyed the daft moments in the show, along with the show's theme song Monster Men written and sang by Iggy Pop, which I have to confirm is a total banger in my opinion and recommend listening to.
The show also received a PC/Dreamcast game that was an entirely different canon to the show, by the name of Stupid Invaders.
This game was originally made to dedicate Jean-Yves Raimbaud as he had passed away before the game came out. This game was given a T rating due to it taking a risqué approach to the characters instead of a comedic one like the original show. A strong grace the game would have however would be that it had the show's original voice actors doing the roles of their respected characters.
I also wanna confirm that this show did make a few cameos and Easter eggs in shows like Oggy and the Cockroaches in episodes like Bitter Chocolate and Night watchmen plus the dollhouse from the episode Baby Doll was based on the house the cast of Space goofs hide in. The roaches from said show even made an appearance in the episode Space Sailors and even episodes of Oggy were seen being played on Bud's TV in a few episodes, too.
I think it's also kind of sad that Space goofs is kind of forgotten nowadays, whenever someone says Xilam, Oggy, or Zig and Sharko come to their minds and not Space Goofs.
There is a channel on YouTube with episodes to the show on it, but they're all "Kid friendly'd" unfortunately.
If you wanna watch episodes of this show, feel free and maybe even find and listen to Monster Men by Iggy Pop.
That's everything I can share about this show, I hope you enjoyed reading this review.
Comment if you saw this show and I hope to bring another review in the future.
