*chuckles... believe what you want, but I think that much is already here... I think the term A.I. (artificial Intelligence) is a misnomer. Once you have intelligence, it is a being. The huge difference comes when that AI is unfettered.

You should read 'The Ship That Sang' by Anne McCaffery. A most beautiful writer and one of my faves (of many).

I can't see a human as an animal-like robot. The dynamic you have between the two comes off sad.

*smiles... the human was a human, simply abducted, as humans used to abduct Wolf pups. Yes, the dynamic is sad, but for a reason.

I really like the way you turned the AI thing on its head. A sentient ship with a sentient assistant that gets lonely and wants organic company? That could be turned into a full novel, I believe. There's a lot to think about in that.

by the by - I was watching a (bad) adventure movie the other day and one of the bad guy's henchman was a thick set Scot. He confronts the good guy with a tirade of verbal abuse, and the young fellow hesitates and then says, "What did you just say?"

I worked with a Jamaican fellow named Rohan. He was a lefty, and I was a righty, and we had the best time teasing each other. He was probably one of the best mechanics I ever met. The company never appreciated that fact and he eventually left. Management can be so blatantly stupid.

One day he had to leave in the middle of the day because his house motion detectors were screaming he was being burglarized. Come to find out, the ceiling fan was on in one bedroom, and a birthday helium balloon had gotten loose.

He went in packing, so I never let him live it down. 'Did you plug the balloon Rohan?'

This reminds me of an illustration from back in the late 90's. It was possibly a book or magazine cover. It was a painting of a woman with a huge robotic dog/wolf. The robo-dog was in the foreground facing the viewer's right and it has a little flame coming from its mouth.

That piece made me think of stories where a uplifted dog or wolf brain was installed in the robot.

I wish I could find that illustration again, but it was so long ago.

and I would love to see that too...

No reason why you couldn't stick a human brain in there either, in fact some people might jump at the chance if there was something wrong with their own body, or maybe just out of curiosity.

I was watching a rather well done anime series recently, 'Cyber City Oedo 808' which is from the early 1990's, at one point one of the human characters says to his robot colleague, "To err is human, to really mess things up you need a computer", "We were designed and built by humans, therefore we inherit your flaws", the robot replies.. Hopefully they will inherit our strengths as well.

The Day The Machines Took Over... always pack an easy access crescent wrench, and keep a pair of wire cutters in your sock...
