White Sun Communications Field Primer Series: Hepplen Sovereignty (Race: Touborii). Rifle Guards: Assault Gunners. demonstration of the Assault Gunner frame kit and combat exercises.
As part of a Sovereign Guards Rifle Platoon, a squad of Rifle Guards consist of a means of transport, often an APC, multiple Rifleman, a Leader and 2 Assault Gunners. an evolution of the squad Machine Gunner using the venerable Galaxy Pattern GPMGs that are used often from a prone position with the help of the Gunners Assistant to aid in reloading. Assault Gunners no longer require a gunners assistant and as mobile and responsive as the rest of the squad. the member that would be the gunners assistant is now taken up as the second Assault Gunner.
unlike most other Tobourii Empires and states whos combat doctrine went to the direction using 8.32 short rounds for increased capacity weapons to maintain high volumes of suppressive fire for longer periods against threats, the Hepplen Sovereignty doctrine takes the direction of using more heavier hitting munitions at the expense of high capacity suppressive fire such as the preference for the use of advanced Battle Rifles in 8.32 long, eventually this resulted in the development of Jet Rifles that use armour piercing high explosive micro-rocket rounds as their primary service rifle. this however resulted in the greater need of a suppressive weapon with several proposed solutions such as a domestically produced light machine gun in the 8.32 short. rather, the concept and deployment of the Exoframe weapon support kit is developed to address this need while using several common pieces of equipment that is in use already.
The Most widespread weapon used by the Touborii is the "Galaxy Pattern" General Purpose Machine Gun. using the powerful and extremely common 8.32 Long cartridge typically used in Touborii designs in almost all of their states and empires as a machine gun, battle rifle or sharpshooter round. the Galaxy Pattern or also known as the Galaxian is commonly used as a bipod mounted squad machine gun with a belt feed, hot-swap barrel and of an extremely robust design that sees this weapon to be used throughout the known space for centuries that give it an extremely wide array of applications.
The Assault Gunners of the Hepplen Sovereignty of the Sovereign Guards, the primary standing military body of this particular multistellar empire produces the Galaxy Pattern for their own forces as the machine gunner element of their rifle platoons but in an effort to improve their mobility that is made possible with their mass-production ultralight exoframes that allows them to wear heavier body armour with improved endurance at no loss of mobility, an attachment kit is designed by Heptunn Metal Works, the state owned industrial base on the Imperial World (head of state world) of Hepplen, allows the Machine Gunners to use the Galaxy GPMG while on the move without the need to use the bipod to achieve stable aiming and provide suppressive fire while advancing, and the continuous ammunition belt fed through a segmented feeding duct from a ultra high capacity magazine-capsule with an external sleeve that protects the system from debris, shrapnel and dirt. this allows an extremely high firing capacity and the success of the system led to the platform being approved for mass production and disseminated through the entire military apparatus of the Hepplen Sovereignty. as it is a rather minor modification to the existing stocks of Galaxy Pattern GPMGs this made the logistical burden light then it is to fully replace it. and the AMP (artificial musculartory polymer) gimbal support arm is easily attached to the existing sets of exoframes in use. the modifications to the GPMGs are typically the removal of the barrel shroud and bipod to reduce weight, a horizontal foregrip and an addon to the feed trey to attach the ammo belt feed duct.
Successor GMPG: Heptunn Metal Works Armaments Research Bureau: Mass Production Series Armament 3/55 (machine gun model 55)
after the success of the converted GPMGs to accept the Assault Gunner frame kit units, in which the decision was made to initially use as an addon kit make the mass trialing of the concept to reduce the logistical burden, the decision was then approved by the Hepplen military command to begin the "phase II" of the Assault Gunner system with a proper dedicated GPMG to replace the venerable Galaxy Pattern GPMGs in the Assault Gunner role.
the HeptunnARB Arm-3/55 is more comfortable, lighter and designed with the system in mind but still based off of the proven Galaxy Pattern platform. one key change is the changing of the feed position to the opposite side as it is a common complaint to have the belt run across from the user's chest for the majority right handed users. newer domestically produced materials for the construction of the guns allows its to be durable while having a somewhat smaller profile and lighter mass to further assist aiming with the gimbal frame arm. the munitions magazine-capsule remains the same but filpped around to change the direction the feed duct and as a result can use a smaller length of the duct, further reducing weight. the finned based at the barrel typically used for the Galaxy Patterns is removed as the newer materials developed by the Sovereignty for the newer barrels have better thermal tolerance and dissipation at reduced weight, but the threading remains the same to ensure reverse compatibility with the more common Galaxy Pattern barrels should the need arises. the weapon has also proven highly successful and many Galaxy Pattern GPMGs are returned back into their old role as a bipod machine gun for the more conventional gunner+assistant teams but may also be returned into Assault Gunner role if needed. however as it is a recent addition, the Arm-3/55 has not fully been distributed the further out regions of their empire.
