I’ve been a fan of Kirby since I was a kid; between the cute setting and characters, unexpectedly nightmarish opponents and lore, and all the fun of Copy Abilities (obviously excluding Kirby’s Dream Land, which is still a fun and excellent game in its own right), it’s always been one of my favorite series! I’ve played and loved almost every main game, and some of the spinoffs (Canvas Curse, Epic Yarn, Mass Attack, and Rainbow Curse, though I never finished that last one). The only main games I haven’t played are Amazing Mirror, Star Allies, and Forgotten Land (though I’m definitely going to play those last two when I can afford them). And out of the cast of characters, Daroach has always been my favorite (Magolor’s a close second). Between the awesome hat, boss fights, music, and just being flat out adorable, he’s always impressed me. It was great getting to talk to him and get tips in Mass Attack, and when I get Star Allies, I can’t wait to play as him! Hopefully the rest of the Squeaks get their time in the spotlight; it’d be interesting to know more about them!
I still can’t believe how little hypno art there is of Daroach; Squeak Squad, Mass Attack and Star Allies have ben out for how long? To my knowledge, this is the second picture of him hypnotized (the first being a lovely drawing by TrueDraceus, who inspired me to try this picture; thank you so much!) Hopefully, that changes at some point.
It had been about a month since Kirby had gotten back from the Forgotten Land where the animals reigned. They’d had a nice conversation, swapping stories about their adventures and all the interesting things they’d seen. Daroach cracked up as Kirby described a dancing, doll-obsessed armadillo, and the trap he’d lured him into. At least he’d gotten out faster than the last time he fell down a hole in the ground…
Daroach had to hear that one. Soon enough, he was learning all about the cave escape/treasure hunt Kirby’d had long ago. Apparently, Kirby had found something that was a dead ringer for his wand, along with more treasures than he could count.
The mouse’s ears perked up at that. Could he, by any chance, borrow the wand? (He was hardly going to steal from a friend. Especially not one who’d pursued him across the galaxy over shortcake…)
Kirby sadly shook his head no. He’d give it to him, but he’d already used up or given away everything he’d gotten from the cave before he even knew Daroach. If it made him feel any better, he was pretty sure he hadn’t gotten everything from down there. He could try if he wanted; the hole was maybe a mile from his house.
Daroach gave his thanks and a pat on the head. It was quite alright; if anything, this just gave him a treasure hunt to enjoy!
Kirby beamed, happily waving goodbye as Daroach took off towards his airship. He hoped he found something!
Kirby had been right; he’d missed quite a few chests. Upon realizing the size of the caverns, the Squeaks had split up, each one taking their own area. If any of the four got stuck, they could call the others; after hearing Kirby’s story of being split in four, Doc had upgraded their phones. No matter where they were, they could get a signal, and a call for help could be met with the recipients warping to the Squeak’s location. So far, it had gone well; they’d found everything from a fancy glass slipper to… a bucket for some reason. Sadly, there was nothing that could be used as a weapon; the closest they’d found to that was a badge with a lightning bolt that made its wearer do midair somersaults when they jumped. (Storo had wisely passed that to Spinni after banging his head on the ceiling three times in a row.)
A pity. Dual wielding had sounded delightful.
Still, he couldn’t complain too much. They were finding lots of treasure, and very little trouble; this was definitely one of their smoother searches, nothing like that abandoned factory with the hammer-wielding robots. The most problematic thing he’d seen were those bizarre computer windows, and they had been more fun than threatening. How often did you get an RPG battle in real life, complete with turns and a level-up? Granted, he wasn’t certain if his “Squeakiness” going up was a good thing, and he’d like to find his phone sometime soon (holding onto small objects while dodging through a dragon’s windstorm was easier said than done), but he wasn’t too concerned; worst came to worst, he’d track it down the next time a teammate called.
Thankfully, it looked like he’d finished his section, so once he’d found his phone, he could sit back-
A tap on his shoulder (or whatever passed for one when you had no limbs) snapped the Squeak from his search, whirling around to find himself facing a snake. With a yelp, he warped a few feet back, wand at the ready; sentient or not, predators put him on edge. (There was a reason why he tried to keep his distance from Nago.)
The snake assured him he meant no harm; his name was Kaa, and he was simply looking for a way out. He’d fallen down here, and unlike so many, he couldn’t fly out. He and those other mice seemed to know what they were doing; perhaps they could help?
Daroach hesitantly introduced himself and gave Kaa directions. If he went down the minecart tracks, he should eventually find a Warp Star. He could ride that to freedom. The next cart was right past the door on the other side of the room.
Kaa thanked him; he’d been worried he’d be stuck here forever! Was he all right, by the way? He seemed nervous.
Daroach sighed. Was it really that obvious? He meant no offense, but when it came to creatures known for eating mice, he’d always been a bit uncomfortable.
Kaa wasn’t offended. Really, he felt bad for him; he was missing out on making so many friends! He’d been so helpful with the directions, so how about he returned the favor and helped him with his fears?
Daroach would’ve raised an eyebrow if he had one. How, exactly, would he manage that?
Kaa chuckled. How about they started with some eye contact? He’d found it was an excellent way to build trust.
The leader of the Squeaks shrugged as he looked into the snake’s eyes. He supposed it couldn’t-
Daroach’s jaw dropped as Kaa’s eyes burst into ring after ring of the most beautiful colors the rodent had ever seen. Every swirl had its own special shine, sweeping aside his thoughts and troubles as it filled him with warm, fuzzy bliss. Gems, treasures, power – nothing could compare to this! Kaa beckoned him closer, and Daroach stepped over with a smile, his pupils shrinking to pinpricks. The colors were even better up close, every swirl sending him deeper and deeper. He barely noticed as drool escaped his lips; dazed and delighted, Daroach was drifting through a rainbow sea.
The snake’s tail slid through his fur, soft, scaly strokes sending shivers down his spine, a loving squeeze earning a happy squeak. Coils wrapped around the mouse, compressing and caressing in the greatest massage he’d ever gotten. Daroach moaned in ecstasy, his tongue drooping out of his mouth as he practically melted into the coils. Cuddled and cherished, his vision filled with color, not a thought in his head but of the snake and how good it all felt – Daroach was in heaven, and he never wanted it to end.
Kaa began to speak, his soft, silky voice slipping into the Squeak’s mind. Daroach was a treasure in his own right, someone to be valued and loved. Treasure needed an owner for that, and who better than the loving snake who’d given him so many spirals? Daroach would be his treasure, a precious pet who provided his master anything and anyone he wanted. He’d be loving and obedient, and his master would love him in turn, taking up the burden of his free will and thoughts as he showered him with all the coils, cuddles and colors he could ever want.
Daroach had never agreed faster. He’d be Master’s treasure! He loved Master, and wanted to obey him; a life as his pet sounded amazing!
A quick tug on the neck, and with a PING! Daroach broke out into the silliest smile that had ever crossed his face.
Kaa chuckled as he scratched his new pet behind the ear; it was amazing how well things worked out sometimes!
He hadn’t lied once in his conversation with Daroach; he really had fallen down a surprisingly hard-to-notice hole, and he really would like to get out. He’d followed the Squeaks in hopes of an escape (and in hopes of snaring a cute pet), and he’d certainly say Daroach trusted him now. Kaa would keep his word; he’d rid the rodent of his silly fear of snakes and other predators, even out of trance.
Daroach would be helpful for so many things; fun, conversation and companionship, of course, but being able to hunt down whatever and whoever he wanted… now that was a rare skill. Combine that with the blimp and the adorable appearance, and he was perfect!
And to think, he came with friends.
