The F/A-18E "Super" Hornet is basically just a derivative of another derivative (the F/A-18A was based on the Northrop YF-17A Cobra).
The "E" variant just added on the range, power, payload, FCS, instruments, computers, larger airframe, and other equpment that the F/A-18 should have had to begin with in 1980. It still won't stand up to a Mig-29 in a dogfight, and it's still WAAAAYYYYY too slow for any of it's roles (Mach 1.8, versus more than Mach 2.2 in all contemporary and projected threat aircraft).
