Not only that, but his mind/instincts will tell him the wings are "supposed" to be there, and then he'll be unable to get sensations from them or move them. Phantom Limb is a distressing sensation, or at least frustrating.
Regardless, it should be enough that they're his, and he wanted to keep them.

To be fair, Brand is allowed to be upset over a loss of body part even if they are non-functional.
... Sadia probably would not have been happy to need to take the both of them back if this had gone as planned, but I think she would still have been fine with that if it had gone to plan.
