In my headcanon, after some visits to his office, the principal could notice that Alf is not really as mean as he want to pretend, and he had some talks with Alf trying to tell him the good tings he can see in him. With the time, the principal became in a good influence for Alf, trying to make him to change for better, and even becoming in a kind of second paternal figure for the little Bull Terrier. And Alf started to be really fond of him, respecting and appreciating him.

Sometimes we only need someone who can believe in us.
