Oh boy, there's a lot of cool stuff to unpack here! I literally had to look up bathypelagic for this; The low levels of oxygen in the water, icy temperatures, and scarcity of food sources make the so-called 'midnight zone' a damn good aquatic equivalent to scaling a mountain.
Bravo. Bravo.

Pretty much what I was thinking before I looked it up. I think C.S. Lewis actually referenced something like that in one of his Narnia books. The kids meet some Mer-people on their sailing adventure, and they do compare their darker depths with the high peaks of mountains in how dangerous they are.
Great minds think alike, eh? Maybe someone should write some books with mermaids and mermen as the protagonists. See what kinds of adventures they can get up to beneath the ocean waves.

Hmm, lemme just look that up...
Huh. Interesting. Not much for gay romance myself, but it's good to know someone is working with the idea! Merfolk adventures seems like something that definitely needs more fiction written for it. There's a lot of neat ideas we haven't really explored yet, y'know?
