Due to a delay in the trip, I had missed the males. Only the females were left on the cliffs, feeding their young to a size where they would be able to brave the winds by themselves. One individual I assumed to be a straggler male turned out to be an elderly female, crest unusually large and colourful but also craggy from age. She eyed me warily but didn't take off, letting me get close enough to see the salt crusts on her beak below the nostrils. The disappointment of having missed the males and their capricious mating flights waned when she allowed me to sketch her up close.
