A little story I wrote about a couple my significant other and I made together.

The sound of the waves painted a serene calm on the beach as the fleeting light of sunset danced along the ever moving ocean. Such a sight always seemed to make the world slow down just a bit, making you wanna sit down and reflect on life. That’s what one sea otter thought at least. Grey was what you may call a recluse, spending most of his time alone either in his room or someplace scenic. He sat there staring at the waves with a camera in his hand, waiting for the perfect shot. Nothing in the world existed to Grey beyond this sight. He waited and waited until…
“Oh! Grey! There you are!”
Grey jumped and flung his camera several feet into the air before stumbling to catch it. He turned to see a rather tall and very heavy shark wearing a university hoodie that was still a bit too small for him, as well as a small cap. His smile showed off his many, many sharp teeth.
“M-Martin!” The otter yelped, “You startled me!”
Martin’s smile flipped into a small frown. “Aw, sorry bud! I forget you get absorbed in your hobby like that”
“I missed my shot…” Grey sighed.
“You can still take another one!” Martin smiled again.
“No, it doesn’t… nevermind, what’s up?” Grey said, adjusting his glasses and looking up at his tall, overweight friend.
“Oh! You left your backpack in Ms. Raggimore’s class!” Martin explained, handing his otter friend a flowery backpack.
“I-I did?” Grey said, blushing, “But my camera was-!” He stopped for a moment, realizing that he merely pulled the camera out of his backpack and ran off, “Oops…”
“You’re so silly, sometimes!”
Grey snatched the backpack and puffed his cheeks a bit. “O-oh yeah? Well, I saw you sneaking thirds in the school cafeteria again today!”
Martin chuckled heartily, “Damn straight! A bigger belly gives me more air room to play my trumpet!”
The otter stares a bit, then snorts, “I don’t think that’s how that works!”
“Well I’m good at trumpet, right?”
“Yeah, you sure are, big guy!” Grey says, turning his head and blushing while putting his camera in the backpack carefully.
“Oh! Mind if I sit by you? It’s not exactly an easy trip from the college to the beach!”
Grey’s ears perk up as he stutters “O-oh! R-right! Sure!”
Martin plops down next to Grey and chuckles, “Thanks, ya little goober”
“N-nice evening, yeah?”
“Well you did wanna take another picture of the sunset again, so I guess so” Martin says as he stares out to sea.
“I wanted to know what y-you thought of the view”
“Me?” Martin mused, “Well… I think it’s really good! A nice view to share~”
“Y-yeah… share”
Martin chuckles and grabs the otter into a side hug, causing the little guy to yelp in surprise.
“And who better to share it with than my goober~”
“H-hey! I thought you would stop using that nickname?”
“Awe, lemme have my fun!”
“F-fair enough, big guy” Grey smiles before leaning into his much larger companion and nuzzling into him.
The two sat in silence for a bit, staring at the sunset together. Their warm embrace was all they needed. That is… until Martin’s loud grumbly belly broke the silence.
“Whoops! Guess I’m hungry!” He chuckled.
“Wanna get some ice cream?” Grey offered.
“Heh, you know my stomach so well, it’s scary!”
“Well then! Let’s get some ice cream, big guy!” Grey smiles.
Without warning, Martin picks Grey up, again startling the small otter.
“Wh-whoa!”
Martin proceeds to set Grey on his shoulder and says, “There you go! Nice little seat for you!”
“Hehe… l-little warning next time… maybe?” Grey says, still a bit disoriented.
“It was still fun!”
“I-I guess” the otter stutters, blushing some more.
“And you can’t forget this!” the shark says, tossing the small otter his bag. It lands in the otter's face and slides into his lap.
“Oof! Careful!” The otter yelps, opening his bag and sighing in relief.
“Oh gosh! Your camera! Is it okay?” Martin asked, feeling guilty.
“Yeah… it’s survived worse” the otter said before zipping up his bag and slinging it on his own back.
“Sorry… wasn’t thinking”
“Guess we’re both a couple of airheads!”
The two chuckle as Martin starts heading off. The two of them chat the whole way to the ice cream shop, meeting up with their favorite marine iguana at the counter.
“How’s it going, you two?” he says, smiling.
“Same as ever, Steve!” Martin smirks.
“Well, what can I get you two lovebirds?” Steve teased, causing the two to blush.
“I’ll have an extra-large hot fudge sundae!” Martin smiles.
Grey looks up at the menu and says “I’ll have a waffle cone with a single scoop of chocolate… please!”
Martin smirks,”Make it two scoops, Stevie!”
“H-hey!” Grey tries to protest but Steve is already ringing them up.
“A growing otts needs some sweets,” Martin teased.
“N-not that much! You want me to end up like you?” Grey frowns.
“Maaaybe” The shark giggles.
Grey opens his mouth as if about to say something but is cut off by the reptilian cashier.
“Alright, you two! That’ll be $23.42”
“I swear it gets more expensive every day,” Grey says, tapping his card to the machine before Martin grabs the ice cream.
The shark waves “Thanks Stevie! Good luck with the project!”
“You too, Martin!” The iguana says before the two head off to a booth.
“You two are in the same class?” Grey asks.
“Yeah,” Marvin answers, “Didn’t I tell you? He plays the trombone in my class”
“Huh… I think I Remember you saying something like that” Grey says before taking a lick of ice cream.
Martin, however, starts to heartily dig into his enormous bowl of ice cream. Taking big, huge bites at an alarming rate.
Grey merely silently watches as the shark devours his icy treat. He was mesmerized by how much the big guy could shovel it all in. Grey sighs as he absentmindedly eats his own ice cream. The otter was always captivated by Martin’s personality- very open and honest, though he normally kept to a small friend group, he was always the loudest one. Even now, he was definitely the best thing in the room.
Grey finished up his ice cream before Martin and casually pulled his camera out of his backpack. The shark, still unaware, kept eating with gusto. The otter smiled and silently chuckled before lining up the shot and… Snap! He took a picture with a nice, quick flash.
“Wha- huh?” Martin looked up, dumbfounded, and with ice cream all over his mouth.
Snap! The camera went off again, making Martin frown, “You taking pictures of me again?”
“Of course!” The otter said, blepping, “You’re quite the subject after all~!”
Martin blushed a bit, “Hehe, at least capture my good side!” He says, flexing his flabby arms.
Grey giggles before taking another, and another!
“You’re silly!” Grey elates.
“No, I’m awesome!” Martin retorts.
“You have ice cream on your face, babe” Grey said, chuckling.
A look of realization grew on Martin’s face before- Snap!
“H-hey! Why didn’t-” Snap! “G-Grey!”
“Yes, Marty~?” The otter teased.
“S-stop! You’re embarrassing me!!” Snap!
“What’s the magic word?”
“Grey!” Martin huffed. Snap!
“Hmm… nope! Colors aren’t particularly magical in that sense- even if I find them magical~”
“P-please!” Martin stammered.
“There it is, my flustered sharky!” Snap!
Martin groans before chuckling, “You really are a goober!”
Grey chuckles, too, “Maybe I am!”
The two share some more laughs and Martin finishes up his extra big sundae before the two head off to their dorm. The two enjoying the rest of the night together as the unlikely couple they are…
