Good question! Cheris and other chomers paints themselves for a few reasons. The main reason is because body paint like this is proof that the chomer is "friendly" and is from a city or settlement. Wild chomers don't have access to colorful and durable paint. So if a person from Cheris' world encounters a chomer in the wilderness and it's not painted they should be warry. It might attack them like a wild bear in our world would!
