As an adventurer, I often actively seek out my next quest. Listening to rumours, following tracks in the wilds, stumbling across ancient ruins, spotting strange magical phenomena on the horizon...
But other times, it's just about being in the right place at the right time. Or the wrong time. Like staying in a sleepy country village when some raiders come raiding, or monsters come...monsting. In that case, there's little time to prepare - I just grab whatever happens to be at hand and do what a warrior does.
