The school of friendship had many different creatures from all over Equestria. One of these students was a hippogriff named Silverstream. She was a bundle of energy and wanted to know more about Equestria, constantly obsessing over new things she had never really had back home in Seaquestria, even something as simple as a flight of stairs. Her friends enjoyed her company and her energy, and she had a special trick which they all loved.
Silverstream, like most hippogriffs, possessed a pearl shard that allowed her to turn herself and others into aquatic animals. For a hippogriff like herself, Silverstream could turn into a seapony, which would allow her to breathe underwater for an indefinite amount of time.
It was a typical day at the school of friendship. Classes had wrapped up for the day, leaving the young six to look for something to do. The six friends were hanging out in the lounge trying to find something fun to do.
“We could fly to Canterlot?” Gallus offered.
“I don’t think our professors would like us going away for so long.” Sandbar responded.
“So that leaves visiting other parts of Equestria out of the question…” Smolder groaned.
Just then, Silverstream flew into the room carrying a poster. “Hey, guys, check this out!” she squealed, quickly shoving the poster into Smolder’s face. The orange dragon pushed her friend back so she could read what was on the poster. It showed a couple of ponies swimming across a pool with the words “Youth Swimmer Championship” written across the top.
The poster also had some extra information: “High Schoolers will be able to show off their swimming skills. The best of the best will compete to see which school has the fastest swimmer” Smolder showed it to the rest of her friends as Silverstream explained her excitement.
“Can you believe it!?” the giddy hippogriff asked. “It’s a contest for swimming! I was born for this!” To prove her point, Silverstream quickly used her pearl shard to turn into a seapony and land in one of the chairs in the lounge. “This is so great! What do you guys think?”
The five creatures glanced between each other as they all thought of the elephant in the room to discuss. “Um… Silver? You know that most creatures don’t have access to your pearl shard, right?” Sandbar asked.
“Um… I don’t think so. Why do you ask?”
“Well… You might be at an unfair advantage here...”
“What do you mean?” Silverstream asked.
Ocellus decided to help explain the situation to her. “Silver, since you can turn into a seapony, you can swim in the water much more naturally than anycreature else…” the changeling spoke. “Not to mention, you’re able to breathe underwater while other creatures can’t?”
“Yeah, you’re going to mop the floor with the other swimmers,” Gallus noted. A smile crossed the seapony’s face before the griffon spoke again. “That’s not a good thing.”
Silverstream was confused as she switched back into a hippogriff. “What are you saying?” she asked.
“Silver, your shard is going to count as cheating.” Sandbar said. “And it’s likely going to get you disqualified from the competition.” This made Silverstream a little upset.
“Maybe it not be so bad,” Yona spoke. “Maybe Silver practice swimming as hippogriff?”
Silverstream rubbed her arm as she thought about this. “Thanks Yona, but… It won’t be the same.” She stood up and walked out of the room, with her friends looking at each other.
“Do you think we were too hard on her?” Ocellus asked.
“She just needs a moment to understand,” Sandbar replied. “We’ll try talking to her later. You have to understand why she was so excited.”
“That’s true,” Gallus commented.
Silverstream slowly walked down the hallway until she came to the middle of the school where a moat and a couple of bridges were located. She seemed to be the only creature around so she decided to try and swim as a hippogriff. She jumped into the water and moved her arms around, but it was clear that she had a lack of experience.
She eventually gave up and turned herself into a seapony so she could take a minute and calm down. “Man, I’m never going to be able to learn how to swim as a hippogriff!” she sighed. She sat down at the bottom of the moat, resting her head on her forefins. Silverstream just didn’t know what to do.
Suddenly, she saw a poster of the swimming championship sink down towards her. The seapony caught it, but she thought that the poster looked different. Before Silverstream could make out the details, her vision started to become blurry. Confused, she rubbed her eyes to see if that could clear things up, but it didn’t work, leaving Silverstream quite concerned.
She swam back up to the surface with the poster and poked her head out of the water to look at it. Instead of showing ponies swimming, it looked to be a lot of creatures that had melanin skin, and they didn’t have any hair showing as they were covered up by colored caps with matching leotards on their torsos.
“Is this a different poster?” Silverstream questioned. She was confused about why her vision looked clearer than it did underwater. Wanting to test something out, she left the poster beside the moat and dove back underwater. Once again, everything underwater looked blurry. “Do I need some glasses or–” She paused as a rush of water rushed into her mouth.
This wasn’t such a bad thing as a seapony, but for some reason, she couldn’t breathe! Feeling herself begin to choke, Silverstream quickly swam back up to the surface, where she gasped for air as soon as her head was out of the water. “What is wrong with me!?” she screamed, panting. Silverstream was horrified about what just happened. She should’ve been able to breathe underwater, not to mention see things clearly.
Feeling that she should report this to someone, Silverstream tried to use her shard to change back into a hippogriff. However, there wasn’t a flash as she remained as a seapony. “Oh no! Now my shard isn’t working!” Silverstream began to really panic now, her body wasn’t working as it was supposed to and now she didn’t have a way of becoming a hippogriff again.
Just as she started to panic, Silverstream took a deep breath and calmed down. This was… Natural? A pearl couldn’t transform a creature. In fact, she shouldn’t be wearing jewelry in the water at all! Something felt missing, though. Silverstream pulled herself out of the water and looked around as her pearl shard started to split in two.
As the pearl shard split, it started to turn translucent and started to change material. It started to turn into plastic as the strap holding it around Silverstream’s neck changed too, turning into rubber and becoming much stretchier. The pearl shard was now a pair of goggles.
Silverstream stopped and looked down at the new set of goggles hanging around her neck. “Oh, there it is!” she said. “I’m so forgetful! I could probably lose my head if it wasn’t attached to me!” With that, the seapony pulled her goggles over her eyes before she pulled herself back into the water. This time she held her breath before diving down into the pool.
Swimming felt a little off since she was swimming as a seapony, but she now had to hold her breath. But that’s how it normally was, though. Even though Silverstream wished she could breathe underwater, she knew that was unrealistic. As she swam about, she could feel her tail getting a little sore. She realized she forgot to stretch before she started swimming.
The seapony’s tail started to split just like her shard-turned goggles did. The gap forming in her tail started to grow bigger as the pink hue of her scales started to fade in turn for some tanned skin. It wasn’t just her scales that were affected by this, either. Her fins were also getting some tan skin on them as they had little digits growing on their ends.
Silverstream began to wiggle her new toes as she felt like they had been cramped by a set of tight shoes. Her toes would be joined with a new set of heels and ankles beginning to form from her fins as her tail, no, her legs began to feel stiff. As the tail kept splitting apart, her knees began to form and she could feel her legs, now fully grown.
The transforming seapony swam up for some air and began to think of the swimming championship. “I wonder how long I can hold my breath?” She said to herself. She took in as much air as she could before going back underwater. Her finned wings started to wrap around her torso as if they were trying to hug her.
The scales around her torso started to change to a waterproof fabric. Her scales and wings were starting to form into a pattern of alternating light pink and hot pink. This new material would form straps around her shoulders and had holes for her legs. Silverstream now looked to be wearing a swimsuit, particularly her favorite one.
More tanned skin started to form around the seapony’s body as the fins on her arms started to split apart just like her new feet and toes. The joints would grow like roots that we would be able to bend, these “roots” growing fingernails at their ends. That’s right: fingers and thumbs. Silverstream rubbed her head with them as she felt her mind fogging up.
She kept holding her breath as her head looked to be the only part of her body that was still a seapony. Silverstream’s muzzle shrank into her face as her nostrils obtained a small bulge, her nose beginning to separate from her mouth. Her mouth itself would gain a pair of lips as her ears started to shrink in size and move to the sides of her head.
Round earlobes formed on the altering organs as the sensitivity of her hearing began to decrease to the point where all she could hear was the sound of her limbs moving through the water. Lastly, her finned mane started to turn into a more rubbery material. It started enveloping the top of her head, covering her hair and ears.
The seapony’s mane had now turned into a swim cap that would help keep her hair dry and… Wait… Seapony? Did Silverstream mean seahorse? Silverstream? What were these names in her head? The girl swam up to the surface again and pulled herself onto the pool ledge and took a minute to think about what a seapony was.
Wait a minute: Mermaids! That’s what Silver… Sylvia was thinking about those all of the time! She always wished she could be one so she could swim around for as long as she wanted to. Still, there were a lot of good things on land that she couldn’t live without. Sylvia remembered the times when she would practice swimming with her parents, her brother Terrence, and her cousin Skyla.
Sylvia was a very good swimmer and could hold her breath for a very long time. She was excited to swim around later with her friends. When Sylvia heard about the youth swimming championship, she was excited to have a fun competition. Besides, there was a chance of seeing Skyla and racing against her! Sylvia loved to have fun and she loved to swim.
The teenage girl removed her swim cap to show her bright blonde hair as she took a break by the pool. It had changed while she was underwater, with the bridges disappearing, the pool shifting to be one big rectangle, the water becoming chlorinated, and the room becoming tiled. Sylvia took a deep breath since she wore herself out a little bit after practicing swimming.
“Hey, Sylvia!” a voice called out. The swimmer looked over to the doorway to see a blonde boy wearing a blue hoodie. Sylvia recognized this boy as Gallus.
“Hi, Gally!” Sylvia said. “How are you doing?”
“Just fine,” Gallus responded. “We were wondering if you were still going to sign up for that swim race.”
“What? Of course, I am! It’ll be a great chance to see my cousin again. I’m actually taking a break from practicing, since I kind of wore myself out.”
“Oh, I see. Anyways, I was kind of wondering if you wanted to have a swim meet with me and the others?”
“Yeah, I think I can do that. It’ll be fun! I just need to catch my breath for a minute.”
“Okay, cool. I’ll just let the others know and we’ll be back in our swimsuits.” Gallus walked away to inform their friends as Sylvia sat back and relaxed. She had a good practice, she deserved a good rest and some fun with her friends.
