They run. They always run.
No amount of wisdom, gained in ways myriad as there are lives, overcomes their animal nature. They cannot fight, so they fly.
Except, they are all wingless.
The city looked fine at night, a marvel of galvanic engineering that lit up like a phosphor beast the moment its sun disappeared over the horizon. Nary a streak of shadows were allowed to spill into the street, unless they were aesthetically pleasing.
It was in a cacophonous, vital sort of drinking establishment where I was given the name for my quarry: Adamah. At the cost of a handful of Coalition-stamped silver squares, a wiry and watchful rodent told me the bird can often be found in a shop nearby which sold informative material in the form of archaic bound volumes of wood-pulp paper.
The lock was poorly-made. Inside the shop, I looked around and found a small table illuminated with a single beige orb. On it was a stack of thick, yellowing books, and a dark, grey slate. The little owl's been learning, as I found when I activated the slate and looked through his progress towards personal revelation.
Something dropped onto the floor, and when I raised my head I saw the flick of a tailfeather just past an open doorway. The dogs and I went out into the street, which was now barren of pedestrians. Always the reliable one, Shuraim caught the scent first. I let Chevise and Mad Foley trample forward and scout ahead of us.
Ezra pads up beside me now, looking up with a pair of wet, luminous eyes. I tell him the same thing I am telling you: I'm not doing this for my own pleasure. Whatever He has told you, I am not doing this as atonement. I will not stop until He decides to finish his bloody story.
Oh, there he goes around a corner. Wise little owl's got nowhere to go. Nowhere but onto my sweet, special knife.
Hope you're hungry, boys. Dinner is served.
