I find interesting that you merged both a gladiator look with the Harry Potter look here in such a complementary way. I also like the serious pose you gave him. However, as much as I praise you giving secondary lighting due to the wand, the lighting on your hand looks a little odd. Also, the outlines make the owl look out of place 9but that may be due to me being used to your characters having black outlines), and the owl's eyes look wonky. The background, though, truly fits with the overall theme.

allow me to disagree... there is no twist on that books, they are quite traditional plot... the unlikely hero versus the supper villain... but like i told you the wands is the plot device i hate the most... you can split your soul into several receptacles but you need a wand to conjure spells... meh... weak
HP is a decent story line... even if the last books become dark and dense... unlike the first ones you could still see some echoes of Enyd blyton books and teen catching charm... and you can see they are XXI century products bundled with heaps of merchandising and "created necessity"
true but I don't see the problem. People hardly read anymore and is good that are fun, thrilling, fantasy novels for youngsters and why not, adults that break the mold of the traditional wizardry in books. Yeah I know that the story is not 100% original but HP books are not good for creating new stuff but for adding different twists to aleady known plotlines. And well, have you ever tried to write a book? Is hard very hard, specially making one that will be sold to mainstream audiences.
And about the wands, I never gave a damn actually :P maybe is a weak plot device but it gives limitations to the characters and that makes them more unpredictable in many ways. Like the light sabers for the Jedis for example, or the guns for the cowboys ^^ characters with limitations and flaws have more appeal to mainstream readers.
