Jahgo: I've drawn in a reddish nebula thing below his feet... I'm pretty sure that's not visible from earth.
In fact I -think- that brightly coloured nebulas don't exist in an observable form, and are the by-product of special filters and long-time exposures....
Bazz: Really?
Bazz: I thought they were normal shots
Bazz: They're mostly made of cosmic dust and star clusters
Bazz: So I'd think while there would be some variation in appearance, you could get a single snapshot... unless I'm mistaken x: hmm
Jahgo: I could be mistaken, but I think they're normally a lot less bright then they appear in those pretty images people make posters and screensavers out of. They're faint, and you only get the bright colours after letting the exposure go on for minutes. Think of it like a long exposure photograph of a dark room... every little point or pool of light gets amplified, and you might also capture a few flickers of light that were only present momentarily. The result is often something radiant and possibley surreal in appearance, the room will appear to be aglow even though at no point in the exposure did it look like that to the naked eye
Jahgo: http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/05/0.....r-living-room/
Jahgo: that would be a bit of an extreme example
Bazz: Oh, well yeah, though I figure up closer they'd be a hell of a lot more bright. That would make sense since the light's traveled SO MANY LIGHTYEARS THROUGH SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE
Bazz: Measured in buzz lightyears.
Jahgo: yes and no. Obviously some fill in will be needed to offset the falloff (what sort of cryptic language am I speaking here?), but it's unlikely that a long time exposure is providing a realistic view of how a nebula might look if you were on the cusp of it.
of course I could be mistaken, MAYBE EVERY IMAGE OF EVERY NEBULA EVER IS ACCURATE TO HOW THAT NEBULA WOULD LOOK IF YOU COULD GET AT A REASONABLE DISTANCE TO VIEW IT WITH THE NAKED EYE
Bazz: Well I'd hope not
Bazz: IT WOULD TAKE TOO LONG TO GET THERE AND WE'D BE ZOMBIES BY THE TIME WE COULD SEE IT WITH THE NAKED EYE D8
Jahgo: WE NEED TO DEVELOP SLIPSPACE TECHNOLOGY SO WE CAN GET TO A MASS RELAY AND PERHAPS TALK TO AN ALIEN RACE ABOUT ACQUIRING AN IMPROBABILITY DRIVE
Bazz: Well that just sounds silly.
Jahgo: yeah, actually, we could just ask the aliens if Nebulas are really as pretty up close as the screensavers make them look
Bazz: Exactly! O:
