A Mother’s Duty

Alys al-Sakai gently stroked her son Vladmir’s ears, bent close, and brushed her lips against his headfur. The Emperor stirred but didn’t wake up, snuggling deeper into his bedclothes. His mother smiled fondly down at him, performed the same ritual with his brother Farukh, and padded as quietly as she could out of the room. She tried hard not to play favorites between her two boys.
Vladmir had reached his eleventh birthday the previous day and had hosted a sleepover with the children of various nobles and prominent furs throughout the Empire. He’d had a great deal of fun.
It was important, the Empress told the Regency Council, that her son have as normal a childhood as possible. As his mother, she was the head of the Council but could be outvoted at times.
The Indochinese leopard closed the door to the bedroom, leaving the sleeping children alone – well, apart from the security sensors – and she headed for her rooms, stepping into a particular one and taking a hooded cloak from a peg. She put it on as a holoprojector flared to life over her head.
The image she was transmitting was carefully manipulated, so no viewer could discern whether she was feline or even female. “I serve Holy Terra,” she said as the image of the Bishop appeared before her.
“You serve well, Vicar,” the entity said, bowing only slightly. “What news?”
“The Emperor is well, and he enjoyed his birthday,” she said. She smiled; the depth of the hood ensured that no one saw it. “His playtime is necessary.”
“Indeed. His mental balance must be carefully addressed. Serve well.” The image vanished as the projector over her head went dark and Alys shed the cloak.
She went into the next room and disrobed, wryly noting a dried smear of cake frosting on her dress. Well, it’d wash out. The leopardess took a brief shower, allowing herself to relax. Being a widowed mother was hard sometimes.
But, she reflected as she stepped into the bedroom and a lithe young ocelot mel smiled at her, there were compensations.
