Halloween Photos: Splug
A cute picture of my salamander Splug on my pumpkin. Unfortunately I don't have the right set up for him to have a proper hibernation, so I will be letting him go at a forest not to far from me close to a pond.
My brother found him a few months ago running across the pavement on a rainy day near where he worked at the hospital. He brought him home for me. He has been eating mealworms, crickets, nightcrawlers, and earthworms ever since and enjoys his 40 gal habitat.
I wish I had a better setup so I could keep him, but I don't want to stunt him or not setup a hibernation properly for him and kill him here in Michigan. But if anyone maybe knows how I can do it so I could possibly keep him, I would appreciate it. I tried finding out what kind of salamander he was, the closest I could figure is a tiger salamander or a spotted. (i'll prolly post a better pic of him in my scraps in a few minutes)
I'm not to good with amphibian identification, so if anyone could maybe clarify that too, I would appreciate it. XD I'm hoping he isn't an endangered species that I've been keeping here or something, or something I shouldn't keep even if I wanted to... would make me a sad Iggi. :/
EDIT: picture of his markings: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4703935/

Maybe that site will give you some ideas?
I would assume, since it's a salamander from a colder climate, that they do a lot of burrowing during the winter.
Another site i found briefly mentioned, simply asking your local exotic pet veterinarian on what you'd need to safely hibernate them.

that looks like it should help.. my front porch might be a good option and just watch it to make sure it doesn't get to cold, in which i can put him on a secondary porch in the back that doesn't go below freezing, but usually stays right above it mid winter.
thanks, i'll keep looking into it and gets some more soil for him to burrow in for winter.

Reminds me a bit of my tiger salamander, Splorch XD http://www.furaffinity.net/full/2947190/ Though he's about 8" long and this guy looks a bit smaller.
