Games I have been playing, part 1
Dragon Quest IX: When I found out I'd have eight faces to choose from in creating characters, my first thought was, "bullshit. Akira Toriyama can't draw eight different faces." I was right.
Civilization V: Despite how many new World Wonders there are in this game, I predicted correctly that the new Cowboys Stadium would not be featured among them. SUCK ON THAT, NFL HYPE MACHINE
Recettear: I just got Tielle and I really don't like her. I don't like her attacks or her specials or her inability to dash and I cannot convince her to survive. But I feel obligated to level her up because she's there.
Barkley Shut Up And Jam Gaiden: This game is amazing and you should play it.

I'm actually really enjoying the military game a lot more now that I can't just parade giant stacks of doom everywhere I go. I don't know if I like it quite as much as Civ IV (mostly I miss the religions and diplomatic options and helpful graphs), but I'm still holding out to see what happens with updates and expansions.
From poking around in the modbuilder, it looks like it may not be that hard to put religion back in. What I would love to see is religion interfacing with the policy system, so you have a national religion that you can adjust over time instead of adopting one of seven bland flavors. (If you haven't played the Fall From Heaven II mod for Civ 4, I strongly recommend it- among other things, the religions have different effects.)
The troubling thing, though, is that the worst problems with the game are core mechanics (well, and terrible AI): the game does not have size-limiting factors, just growth-limiting factors. So ICS is the only optimal strategy, which is really not what they were trying to do. That they did not notice this (even though it was reflected by the AI's emergent strategy) does not speak well to their ability to retool the game from the ground up to actually balance it. Mods can help with this some- I've been kicking around a few ideas on how to make fewer, larger cities great- but a problem with that is a lot of the problems are things that I don't think we can mod (city growth slows horribly as cities get larger, which it really shouldn't).

I only have DQIX, out of those, but it is life-sucky in an awesome way. Torayama's art style is still balls, but eh. I want Civ V so bad. SO BAD. Also Recettear.
Picture has so much cute. I'll have to dig out some of my insanely punishing nichey DS RPG's for when you visit, though you've probably played most of 'em.
