WARNING: OPINION AHEAD!
About 3 years ago, I was given a Rio. My first mp3 player; joy and rapture. Only... it needs downloadable software to keep running. And, they don't make the software for players they consider 'too old'.
Jet's solution? Smash it with a mallet.
About 2 years ago, I was given an IPod and told to program it for my aunt.
"IPod needs to download 'x' from the main website. Do so now?"
"Yes."
"IPod has detcted playable media on your computer. Scan now?"
*Knows she has at least 10 gigs* "No."
"Now scanning."
"<Explicatives>"
-4 hours later- "IPod has detected more media than it can handle. Download a selection now?"
"No."
"Now downloading."
"<harsher explicatives>"
I ended up handing the thing back to my aunt with a murderous glare, it had 1 gig full of all my video game soundbytes.
Jet's solution? Launch the f*ckin' thing into orbit! XP
But now, we have our Samsung, and all is right with the universe.
Holds roughly 50 songs, plugs right into the computer. I delete what I don't want, add what I do. No software, no "user-friendly" bullsh*t, just my tunes and me. It's about the size of my thumb and runs off of one AA battery, which I have rechargables. I am never without music and it fits into the hide-a-key pocket on my pants. I love you, my Samsung. ;)
Note: If you love your IPod, or your Rio, whoot for you. You will not sway me and I couldn't give a fig what you think of Samsung. You came to my page, not the other way around. :P

Yeah, as if the user-friendly BS wasn't enough, it's so skinny it can't even hold a battery. So they stick some cheap-o memory battery that you have to charge in your computer. And! Every few months or so it needs to be 'serviced' for a new one... freakin' potatomoto wanna-bes...
I'm going solar, man! ;)
