Jami's afternoon retreat was a large cave hidden in the hill side of a dense pine forest. It was the only place where she could ditch her classroom pursuers. It was cozy and allowed her to play her brother's gameboy advance without a judging eye. Oh how she wished she could freeze time and enjoy this peace forever. The sound of the babbling brook, the song birds sharing their voice, and the rustle of the leaves knocked by the breeze melted away the high school troubles.
The dimming twilight was feeling mischievous that night. Sharp pain in her foot made her jump in panic. Only to catch a glimpse of the shadow skittering into the abyss. Fearing infection in her bloody foot she raced home and was taken to the hospital.
Despite the numerous trips, the doctor assured her that itchy bite was harmless. It didn't matter how much she applied the balm her dried irritated skin the pain would not stop. No matter how many times she told others of the changes they responded with "Puberty".
Well, maybe this is a change she was okay with. After all, her cave was much more welcoming than the town ever was.
