An island completely shrouded by fog. This island was mentioned only in a few logbook pages, which were hundreds of years old.
It is mentioned that gigantic Pokemon would live and the buildings are like from a foreign world.
I take my crutch and limp into the kitchen to have breakfast. Afterwards I wanted to get ready for shopping and thought about what else I need besides fruit or vegetables...
It is mentioned that gigantic Pokemon would live and the buildings are like from a foreign world.
I take my crutch and limp into the kitchen to have breakfast. Afterwards I wanted to get ready for shopping and thought about what else I need besides fruit or vegetables...
I was so deep in thought that I didn't hear this as I walked (or limped) to the grocery store. After about an hour I came back and when I wanted to take the elevator, but it did not work. Prior it wasn't so bad as I sat on the handrail in the stairwell and carefully slid down. But this does not work now.
Suddenly I heard a flap of wings behind me....
Suddenly I heard a flap of wings behind me....
"Ahhhh!" I screamed and fell over backwards. Fortunately, the closed elevator door held me. I could hardly believe it: a Charizard plush doll fluttering before my very eyes. A closer look revealed a few patched-up spots on its horns. Anxiously, I asked, "Are you possessed by a ghost, or are you being used by a Psychic-Typ Pokémon?"
"I think we have some things to talk about, but not here in the stairwell" I say as I get back to my feet. As I was about to take the first steps, I noticed that the doll was getting very close to me. "Looks like, someone wants to help me. Since you seem to have managed to open a window and fly down here: Can you maybe take the bag and put it in the kitchen, please? Assuming this one isn't too heavy and too big for you. After all, you two are about the same size."
When it flew out I noticed that it suddenly doubled in size. "More things to sort out" I thought to myself as I climbed the stairs. Once upstairs in the apartment, I put the fruits and vegetables away, closed the windows and sat down at my desk. The charizard was already on it and I asked if everything was allright with him. At the same time I pointed at the patched places on the horns.
It's just... scary. A Charizard doll coming to life could theoretically not only set the entire apartment on fire but also grow out of the entire building, leaving not only you but dozens of other people suddenly homeless. Apart from the mass panic and the reactions of the public authorities...
"Due to my illness, my muscles are weakened. And muscles are not only responsible for movement, they also ensure that a certain and necessary temperature prevails in the body. My body's own "heating" is weakened..." I see the worried face of the doll and immediately change the subject: "Before the mood becomes too gloomy: What do you want to talk about?"
In the meantime, there is another report on the radio about these pages of the logbook. It will take a while to translate everything. Not because it is an old writing, but because the author, a certain Maiq, was known for his sailor's yarn and his somewhat confused language. Nevertheless, they wanted to thank everyone who had contributed so far. I just said, "You're welcome."
In case you are wondering: They were looking for people to "translate" it, since hardly anyone can read that kind of writing these days. They invited volunteers to take a reading test so they could see for themselves how well it performed, and then some were chosen. Among them was me.
I start muttering what else was on the pages of the logbook, which I translated: "Have a fur, although they should not.... Change their size and build.... speak and understand human language... do not eat or drink...". My head falls on the table because it's just a bit too much for my head.
After my lunch, I go back and realize that the plush was no longer on my desk. While I was walking around the room, my crutch seemed to rest somewhere wrong, whereupon it slipped away and I fell over. I landed not on the floor, but on the Charizard, which was now about 1.5 meters tall. Surprised and a little frightened, I looked in the face of the Pokémon.
"Well, how should I put this.... When I played with you as a child, at some point I gave you a name and some character traits. I wrote them on this card. Since today, for whatever reason, you come to life, it may be that my "imagined" character traits do not match with your actual character traits. I do not want to force you to change your actual personality, if you don't want to do."
This informations are on the card:
Skakmat the Charizard
Gender: ♂
Meeting place: on an island of the Orange Archipelago
nature: robust; likes to relax
"positive" character traits: gentle giant, tough, great helpfulness
"negative" character traits: very cuddly, bad at arts (singing, dancing, drawing)
special abilities: changing body size and build at will, great strength independent of size, longer arms than others of his species

"It's not the heater. There is a problem in the heating system of the building. For unknown reasons, there seem to be problems with the heating of the upper floors. Someone will not come to fix the problem until next week. Thus..." I noticed how Skakmat put one of his wings on my shoulders.
I decided to watch a documentary called "Secrets of the Orange Archipelago", which we watch via the Internet on my PC. First, it was about the mysterious "Crystal Onix" and an island whose inhabitants have a pinkish colour because of the fruits that grow there. I asked, "Could you imagine having such a color, Skakmat?"
It is said that these Pokémon live there on purpose, knowing that their abilities and size would lead to chaotic scenes and (unintentional) destruction if they lived elsewhere. "So basically gentle giants... Sounds familiar." and look at Skakmat before a noise from outside distracts me.
"It looks like some people are hoarding purchases as stores will probably be closed due to the onset of winter. That's where a bag or two can break." Looking at the clock, I realize it's time for supper and head to the kitchen. "Thanks for the comfy seat, Skakmat." and stroke the Charizard's forehead.
When I came back after supper, the evening news was on the radio. The weather change begins at night and will continue the following day. The schools and stores will be closed. However, the onset of winter will not last long; already the following day there should be a more moderate weather again. I breathe a sigh of relief.
After another cuddle session with the Charizard, I go to the bathroom to get ready for bed. When I come back to turn off the PC I found some entries in the browser history that I couldn't assign, but I didn't give it another thought. "Sleep well, Skakmat." I say as I turn off the light and get into bed.
"I thought I addressed that this morning; with the destroyed buildings and the resulting homelessness due to growing/giant Pokémon. Also, I think it would be easier for you to fly to the island and ask the Pokémon there, if they would be interested in leaving their home for the short time."
"I didn't mean it that way..." I take a deep breath before continuing, "I'm just too tired to have any discussions." Suddenly I noticed how Skakmat gently put an arm around my neck and gently push me back into bed. The Charizard was lying next to the bed because of its size, but a wing of it additionally covers my body and it started to lay its head next to me.
I took the Charizard's head and pet it, hoping it would stop. I finally fell asleep. When I woke up again, I was no longer in my bed (in sleeping clothes) but at the edge of a forest (in outdoor clothes). I recognized some tall buildings in the distance, but they say me nothing. "Did it me take..." I could not finish the thought, because a shadow surprised me.
The Charizard is so big now that I would only reach to its kneecaps if I were standing. It also seems to have gained some muscle on the arms and chest. "Looks like someone got some inspiration from the internet..." I mutter to myself before continuing louder, "At least we're avoiding the winter chaos that awaits us back home, right?"
I froze in shock, because behind Skakmat suddenly stood a grayish leg. And Skakmat's barely reaches its knee! I looked up in fear and saw that the leg belonged to a gigantic Rhydon. I wasn't sure if it saw me as it lowered its head, but it saw the Charizard and asked in amazement: "Skakmat, is that really you?"
"So it really is you. I was unsure, because your horns looks... different. You suddenly disappeared about the same time as that one person left in his strange nutshell." "Strange nutshell? Does it mean the ship of Maiq?" I wonder in my mind while trying not to get in the vision of that Rhydon.
"Well, he called the thing a "ship", but if you're very tall yourself there's hardly any difference..." said the Rhydon before stretching its head up and moving it back and forth a little. "And looking down all the time like that is hard on the neck. How about coming up to my size, Skakmat?"
The palm of Skakmat was fortunately large enough that I not only had enough space but also that I didn't have to be afraid to fall off. When I was at the eye level of the Rhydon, I could see that it didn't have a skin of stone, but rather a short fur, similar to Skakmat. The Rhydon looked at me skeptically: "Seriously? A human?"
I take a deep breath: "Unfortunately, more than one would like. Let's see: Near extinction of the Lapars and Kangaskhan species, catching Pokémon of different colors and stealing eggs to sell them at a high price, individuals and organizations using Pokémon as tools for their machinations..." I noticed Skakmat rubbing his snout against me, hoping to dissuade me.
My harsh opinion of my own species and Skakmat's counter question seemed to have shocked the Rhydon a bit; at least judging by the facial expressions. "If we go in the human cities, there will be chaos. It's impossible to avoid collerteral damage, like destroyed buildings or innocent people getting hurt by the debris, even if we tried. That would make us heartless monsters in the eyes of humans, the complete opposite of what we are: Gentle giants. Besides... you've already been through this thing..."
"I didn't mean it that way. But it's strange... Normally, we are not able to live or change our size away from this island. We feel safe and at home on this island; if we leave it we become plush dolls, completely unable to (re)act. It looks like someone got very lucky and ended up with a person *looks at me* who gives it that sense of home..."
I hesitantly began to ask, "Um.... You mentioned a person with a ship earlier. Was his name Maiq?" The Rhydon immediately replied: "Yes, that was his name. I remember it well because of its very... unusual way to speak. Why do you ask?" And both Pokémon noticed that I was getting a little pale in the face.
The Rhydon gets very close to the Charizard when the former suddenly huges it and.... was there a squishing sound like from a toy? Fortunately, Skakmat managed to keep me at a distance before I got between the two giants. The Rhydon said: "I... don't know how else to express my condolences for the long time you were in that helpless state. Beside... my name is Rhyolite."
Rhyolite seemed a little confused because of our comparison. "Seriously? Maybe it looks like that to you, because you live in human cities. Take a closer look." The Rhydon walked over to one of these shapes, tore the top of it without effort, and held the broken side up to us. "See? All solid rock. Do you really think humans can live in it?" I shake my head.
"...Anyway, it's good that you're carrying this human around. Such rocks spring up like mushrooms from time to time, without any warning. With our size, it's hardly a problem, but with someone so small.... And speaking of rocks... I want to show you both something. Please follow me."
After a while we came to a rock with a very unusual shape. This cone-shaped rock had a dull, dark sheen and you can feel a mysterious aura. In addition, a spiral staircase ran around the rock, connecting all the openings (or caves) in the rock. The whole structure seemed to come from an ancient, long forgotten civilization.
"Your sleeping place is still the same. It is in one of the top caves blocked with a rock with an image of your species. We just disposed of the straw before it starts to smell. But you are much too big to enter it at the moment. For your human, however, it should be more than sufficient. You can depose him there, because you'll need both hands free soon."
Since I see that the rock blocking the entrance is "only" twice as big as I am, I assume that the cave is not too big for me. "If the bag is not too big and too heavy, and if you clear the entrance, it should be possible." Skakmat (thanks to its size) pushed the rock aside with only one finger and I was able to enter the cave. On the quiet, Rhyolite whispered: "Does your human always walk like... this?"
"Since your human is going to take a while and I'm curious if you're a little... rusty after all these years... how about a "Growth Contest" between us? Oh well, in case you're worried about us causing the rock to collapse: None of us have managed to damage it at all yet. Your human will be safe."
In the Charizard's cave I saw a low table and stone chairs, a small niche for sleeping and a chest of drawers with the bag on it. I took the bag with me and limped out again. But outside I no longer saw the two giants. I looked down carefully and saw the Rhydon lying unconscious. I took a few steps back and asked "What happened here?" and the answer came from far above.
I couldn't believe how huge Skakmat has become. The head alone is so big that it could swallow the rock in one bite without any problems. And despite the size, the Charizard could see and hear me without any problems. A little scared, I try to hold the bag up while leaning against the wall, "I-I think this is the bag you were talking about?"
Skakmat hold a claw of himself right in front out to me and I put the shoulder strap of the bag over it. The tip of the claw was large enough to block the entrance to the cave. At the same time Rhyolite comes back to his senses and sits down. His head was at the same height as the entrance to the cave. While it was oblivious to me, it looked up and spoke to Skakmat, "Wow, you really outdid me very quickly. Congratulations on your victory."
Now Rhyolite notices me and starts muttering to itself: "If this human can read the other human's records, maybe it can..." Now it looks back up at the Charizard and shouts:"Hey, Skakmat! Do you see a small clearing in the forest from there, which has a strange cube-shaped rock?"
Skakmat placed his paw on the edge from the rock, so I could walk on it without major problems. At the same time, Rhyolite climbed up the back of Skakmat until it finally settled between the shoulders. When I found my place on the paw next to the bag, it went up cautiously to prevent me from getting dizzy because of the height difference.
"Time and weather have clearly bleached out the letters. All these vines partially obscure the writing. At home I would have a device or two that would help here, but since I don't have them with me, my options are somewhat limited. A help would be already to have something to make short notes..."
Skakmat handed me a small wooden box with the word "Phone" written on it. I recognized the writing, it was from Maiq and "Phone" was just a short form of: "private handwritings of nothing exceedingly" like written on the back site. When I opened the box there were a few blank little pieces of paper inside as well as a pen, all in exceptionally good condition. "Thank you. Although it will take some time please stay close by. In case something happens."
Rhyolite has grown to Skakmat's height by now and stands next to him, looking down with narrowed eyes. "Well I know your human is standing there, but I can't see him. And even listening to him earlier, I had to concentrate to understand him. You, on the other hand, don't seem to have any problems with it, despite your size. How do you do this?"
"Makes sense, I guess... After all, your human doesn't seem to be in the same mood as the other one. This one had enjoyed running into our path, warning us that someone was there so that we stopped dead in our tracks. Many of us lost the balance and fell over spetacularly. He said it looked like we were slipping on a bar of soap."
"I'm not sure about the latter one, because we don't need to eat to stay alive. I think something else caught your attention like those big papers, or as he called them "maps"; or that little round thing he said he could use to determine his position. Hmm... I thought I heard something..."
After the two have made themselves comfortable (half lying down) I begin: "According to the this, this island was part of an ancient kingdom. At that time, Pokémon were... lets say a bit hostile to humans. So the humans started making dolls that resembled Pokémon for protection. These were processed with a powder, which was extracted from mystical stones and gave the dolls a variety of abilities such as...
"I think an explanation is needed here. Egg groups are a way to group Pokémon into certain categories. If a male of one species and a female of another species can.. "produce" offspring, then both belong to the same egg group. Your species belong to the egg group monsters just mentioned. But with plush this is impossible with the offspring. So you don't have to worry about the island suddenly becoming overpopulated."
"Anyway, two factions soon emerged in the kingdom: One wanted to use these Pokémon for conquest, while the other did not. I couldn't find out exactly what happened after that. However, this dispute seemed to have led to a civil war-like state, which led to the fall of the kingdom. This island was the last reasonably peaceful place..."
"The highest priority was to prevent these giants from being used as tools of war. Attempts to make buildings more robust against these giants were less successful. The only real success was building a tower to live in, which was made of the same material as these mystical stones. It looks like it is the same where you live in."
"It was also noted that they adapt to the "alignment" of their master. One with bad intentions would turn these giants into creatures of destruction; one with good intentions into gentle giants. Therefore, they made the Pokémon more resistant to people with bad "alignment". Furthermore, they would revert to their original state if they strayed too far from these stones. This can be reversed with these stones or they come to a human with "good alignment"...
"Now some things make sense. We can't damage our home, this tower, because it was built that way. Moreover, it explains why it happened to you that after leaving our home, you ended up in this... state. And this "alignment" stuff may also be the explanation why you are a bit... calmer now."
The Charizard grabbed me with the tips of two of its claws and set me down on the paw of the other hand. This one was soft as a bed for some reason. The two giants seemed to have grown a little larger. A thought occurs to me: "Skakmat, please come with your snout right in front of me."
"That is also correct. And I can answer a question from earlier: Why you have no problems seeing, hearing, noticing me, and Rhyolite does. It's because you and I already have a "bond" with each other. It's basically the same as a friendship. Good friends get along without a lot of words, don't they?"
"Moreover, this also seems to be the reason for your slightly different appearance; the long strong arms and your chest..." I noticed how Skatmat continues to hold his muzzle very close to my hand. "Looks like someone wants to be petted..." And I gave the huge Charizard a petting.
My reaction to this: "Well, since antiquity covers a very long period of time, it is not surprising to me that the memories are fading. I don't know exactly what people did back then, but I do know that some humans become very heartless when it comes to power and influence. So I don't take offence at your skepticism, Rhyolite."
The Rhydon somehow seems to show some kind of regrets for his previously obvious equating of all humans. I had an idea and whispered to the Charizard: "Skatmat, can you please do something for me and give him a cuddle? It looks like someone needs a bit comfort and I'm not sure if it would notice if I would do it."
Fortunately, the Charizard quickly realized it had taken the wrong target and switched to the Rhydon. And was there that squishing sound again? Anyway, the Rhydon seemed very surprised by this... sudden closeness, but it said: "Thank you, Skatmat. That's just what I need right now..."
"After you arrived back here I wanted to force you to stay, forever. But after all this happened, I will not do it. If you want to stay with your human, despite the knowledge of being very rarely in this size, then do it. I will not stop you. You are also welcome to visit if you wish."
The Rhydon took a few steps back, took a running start and jumped directly onto Skatmat. We both held our arms protectively in front of our heads, but we waited in vain for the impact. Suddenly there was a squishing sound and a doll of a Rhydon tumbled on the Charizard's snout. It remained motionless.
But no answer came. Fortunately, Skamat's arms were long enough to pull Rhyolite up by its tail. Although it was now hanging upside down, all its limbs were in their original position, as one would expect from a stuffed animal. Even when Skamat dropped it on his snout again, there was only a squishing sound, nothing else.
The Charizard drops it right in front of me. Again, this squishing sound was heard. The doll didn't look new, but it didn't look worn either, but rather used but well cared for. It strongly resembled the dolls that some department stores have on special offer. "Hard to believe this one was as big as you and talked to us, right Skatmat?"
When I came to, I was lying in my bed. I noticed that the PC was still on, "Did I work until that late, that...?" I tried to walk, but my legs were weaker than I thought. I manage to drop myself in the chair. I saw the snow on the windowsill. "Was all of that... a dream or not?" The answer fluttered in front of my face.
Skakmat flew straight to my desk to write a few words on the paper laid out ready. At the same time, a pidgeot knocked on the window with a strange stone hanging around its neck. After a short time it flew away with the message in its beak. At the same time, I noticed that I had a new message in my e-mail box on the computer.
"It's an email from the historians I translated the log for. They thank me for my excellent work and ask if I would be willing to translate more documents." I didn't think twice, because it would secure my income for a while. After I sent the mail, I asked Skakmat, "Would you please pass me my crutch? I was going to the kitchen now to make myself something to eat."
I took the crutch and went to the kitchen. The Charizard stayed close behind me to be there just in case, which fortunately was not necessary. When I came back it was over two meters tall and lying half on the floor. It noticed that I was shivering slightly. It had an idea and gently pushed me in his direction.
Thus began a new day, which despite broken heating and cold weather becomes cozy warm. It was still kind of strange that a plush doll just comes to life, but that hardly bothers me anymore. Because it was the beginning of an interesting friendship.
