Jacob "Jake" Morris is an anthropomorphic seagull who works to keep starfighters in tip-top shape as an aircraft mechanic in VF-36, part of the 104th Composite Unit of the Grand Army of the Republic, serving under the legendary Chanticleer Bluth. He grew up in the seaside town of Carmel, Cartoonifornia, often spending summers on the beach with his friends. His father, who was a marine mechanic before becoming an automotive mechanic and opening his own shop, instilled a love of tinkering in young Jake. In his teens, Jake would sometimes be called on to assist his father in the shop after school, and outside of that, would work on restoring an old car as a side project.
A week after turning 18 in 1943 (Anthro-Avians are the equivalent of five human years old upon hatching), Jake decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy, hoping to either become a Seabee or an aircraft mechanic. Luckily for him, he was selected to become the latter, and was sent down to Los Angeles to learn how to fix the Navy's newest fighter, the Grumman F6F Hellcat. After six months of training, Jake left for Pearl Harbor via San Diego, and was assigned to the USS Essex, just in time for its deployment to support the assault on Tarawa. It was during this initial deployment that Jake got his customary anchor tattoo, and he decided to add the phrase "Hell or High Water" below it as a personal touch. Jake and his compatriots worked hard to keep the carrier's pilots repaired and refitted for combat, and they especially gave it their all during the battles of Kwajalein, Leyte Gulf, and Okinawa. He was particularly lucky to be inside the hangar bay of the ship when a kamikaze crashed into planes on the flight deck on November 25, 1944. After the Japanimese finally surrendered in 1945, Jake was reassigned to the new Americartoon naval air station at Yokosuka for the next three years.
Returning home in 1948 as an accomplished Seaman, Jake took over the mechanic work at his father's shop while his father handled the business side of things. He also went right back to his two loves of tinkering with cars and surfing, just as the hot rod craze and surfing subculture were beginning to become more mainstream. In June 1955, Jake witnessed the occupation of Cartoonia firsthand when the family shop and scrap pile were raided by Disney troops looking for parts and metal to fuel the corporation's war machine. Luckily, the Disney troops did not have time to make off with the stolen parts, as all forces on the west coast were redirected to Anaheim for the coming battle with the Republic. Jake learned about the Republic victory at the Battle of Anaheim over the radio, and having been inspired by his fellow Anthro-Avian Chanticleer, decided to enlist in the 104th. He now works on maintaining the brand-new Americartoon F-86FS StarSabre fighter jets, as well as Republic V-19 Torrents and ARC-170s, on board the RSD Resolute. Jake grew out his hair to make his pompadour bigger and even started wearing a neckerchief as a way to pay tribute to his CO Chanticleer. He even caught sight of Chanticleer in the Resolute's gym from time to time while he was lifting weights, and bumped into him there once.
After winning some regional surfing contests back home following the war's end, in 1960, Jake would be asked to come to Honolulu to work as a surfing instructor for a film called "Hawaiian Holiday", starring Chanticleer's old alter ego Aaron "The King" Prescott. Jake would even appear in the film in a non-speaking role as one of the friends of the main antagonist Hank, the current surfing champion of Honolulu and the rival of the female lead Jean's affection. Because of this, Jake would work as a surfing instructor on a few more beach party films throughout the 60's, most notably 1963's "Beach Party" starring actor/singer Frankie Avalon. Jake's son Nate would also take up surfing, winning the World Surfing Championship in 1983.
