I never said he had to harden, just believe he can pick it up.
An example when you pick up a hammer it doesn't become you, it just becomes an extension of you. Like how the sword of a samurai is considered an extension of themselves.

This is late. but I guess he will have disruptions in his whole body while he tries to reform himself after getting soaked in soapy water as if his whole body got hiccups.
This disruption will make it twice as harder for him to fully concentrate on reforming himself, so each time his body gets a hiccup, he collapses down again into a splash.
