"Once, Zhuang Zhou turned into a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering about, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know that he was Zhuang Zhou. Suddenly he transformed back and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuang Zhou. But he didn't know if he was Zhuang Zhou who had turned into a butterfly, or a butterfly who turned into Zhuang Zhou. Between Zhuang Zhou and the butterfly there must be some distinction!"
In Zeydaan and Isabella's world this is used as a means to describe when a shapeshifter has forgotten, or their transformative magic has forgotten what their base form is.
Zeydaan and Isabella have become Nia... a lot. So no wonder they're now teetering on the edge of falling victim to the syndrome. Not that they'd have a problem with that.
