After playing the Pixel Remaster of Final Fantasy 6, I was in the mood to draw some of the enemies encountered in the game. Got a couple other sketches, but finished this one first; the others still need to be fine tuned, and I probably won't get to them for a while as I work on other projects.
I always enjoyed the ambiguous appearance of the Imperial Soldier, from their mask-like headgear and helmets, to their non-Medieval plate armor. Some media portrays them with varying amounts of leather mixed in, along with the prongs on the sides of the helmet. But the simpler "mass-produced" look of the in-game enemy is something that sticks with me more, especially with how often you fight them.
Brown soldiers, despite being the base palette, are only fought essentially as a special encounter enemy, giving no EXP. The Commander variant, ironically, can be encountered forever beneath the one town, even after it's been liberated. Guess they have no shortage of commanders.
Green soldiers are either notable officers or feeble cadets, depending on translation. But being able to steal their armor to disguise yourself as them is something I've always really enjoyed. Too bad they got rid of the glitch to keep it in the Pixel Remaster.
Reddish ones are troopers/corporals, and will be the ones you'll become very familiar with during the big battle sequence, where every, single, encounter features at least one of them.
The last and most powerful blue ones are commandos/sergeants. Encountered in Imperial home territory, they seem to be augmented with technology, utilizing a program-based attack, and are weak to water and lightning instead of poison like the others.
Hmmm, talking about them like this makes me wish I included the other palette swaps. Might edit this in the future to do so~
