Maitak - together with his brother - finds himself in the team of a sled of one nomadic people, two families to be exact. He is a wolf, and his wild nature is revealed when he is playing games or hunting with his young owner. He regards the leader of his team as his second father, who in turn has appointed Maitak as his successor. He is also unrealistically naive about the idea that he will one day outrun time.
