First of all, I do apologise for the size of the file...this isn't dial-up friendly :( But it could be well worth it if you've always wanted to know how I do that fur effect in Photoshop!
Note: I use PhotoShop 6.0, cuz...well, that's all I have! XD
This is an easy way to make that fur effect, but by all means, it's not the ONLY way to make a nice fur texture. This is just how I do it, and I've had quite a number of people asking me how I do it. So...here it is!

This was interesting, but wow, we sure work in different ways! XD I do all my coloring (highlights and shadows too) on the same layer, I think that´s much easier. :) But everybody´re different and work in different ways, I´m not saying you should do like me or anything. Whatever works the best for you. :)
*nods* I used to do all my highlighting and shading on the same layer of that particular colour too...but I found that if I ever mucked up the shading or highlighting, it'd be hard to fix. If they're on a layer above the actual colouring, then I can just erase the mistakes and do it over...I don't know how it's like on newer versions of Photoshop, but in mine, the History only goes so far back, and once it reaches that point, then it just totally resets EVERYTHING and I'd have to do the WHOLE thing all over again. So I've just found it to be easier this way; making it a separate layer and all ;)
I tried it a bit different. I use GIMP, I took a "galaxy" brush which was basically like a patchy cloudy brush. I took a darker shade of the fur color I wanted, a lighter one too, and then I manually scattered it over the area I wanted to be those colors. Not too different from your noise generation approach.
The part that WAS different though is that I used the galaxy brush for the smudge, it did an uneven smudging because some parts of the brush are more transparent than others. I think the effect was pretty decent :3
