It was a two mile run from the farmhouse to town, and Doc Mitchell's house, but Callum was untiring for the sake of the tiny, precious burden nestled in his saddlebags.

“Hooving cough” Callum's heart sank at the diagnosis. “Don't worry, friend, I have a treatment. You got her here in time, but it will take time to act. Now hold her still...”

The tiny foal barely whimpered as the needle went in.

“The fever should break by dawn. Keep her as comfortable as possible, she will pull through.”

That night proved to be one of the longest Callum had ever experienced. The small bundle on his back as he wandered the halls of his home. He could feel the heat of her tiny body through the swaddling wrap her mother had applied.

True to the doctor's prediction around dawn Star began to pant as he fever broke. Soon she drifted into exhausted sleep. Thomas yielded the precious, sleeping bundle to her relieved mother. It was a new day, and there was still work to do on the farm...
