Militias, Conscripts, Men-at-arms, cannon fodders, whatever you want to call them.
they are the most-used and most expendable unit in all of the army. with only a simple spear, a thin sheet of an excuse-for-an-armor and a tower-shaped shield along with countable hours of training,these guys were given to officers-in-training or the city watches to do only the simplest task one can offer, they are not expected to live pass a week during real battles and should better be off standing around for shows, but they comes in numbers.
and IF they did manage to survive a battle or two, they would be made grunts. which is better than being like what they were in every possible way. plus they begins getting paid as well.
