At last, an original species of my own that I’m truly satisfied with~
The Wolgara are a somewhat tribal society of magic wolf monsters with bellymaws and tailmaws, and a widespread belief that they’re at least generally superior to the average creature. Some commonly cited justifications for which include their immense belly capacity, innate wind magic, and the presence of their belly- and tail-maws.
Typically living in tribes of several dozen individuals, Wolgara commonly make their homes in forests or other biomes which offer concealment in some way, whether it be the caves, trees, or thick fog. When tracking prey, a Wolgara will use their wind magic to create distractions by blowing leaves and grass to catch the eyes and ears of their quarry, allowing the Wolgara to approach with a lower risk of detection.
Wolgara tribes have a wolf-like structure, with an “Alpha”, the tribe leader, receiving first dibs on any prey gathered by the lower ranks during an official, organized hunt. If an individual Wolgara is hungry, though, it is free to hunt for itself to keep itself in fighting shape for the next of its tribe’s hunts.
Speaking of fighting, Wolgara have a rite of challenge if one believes they would be better suited to the role of tribe leader; it is not decided by bloodline alone. When a Wolgara challenger battles the tribe leader, it is not a fight to the death, simply a fight until one side yields. The victor then gets to choose the fate of the loser, while becoming or remaining tribe leader. Common punishments include becoming the leader’s personal servant and worked hard, being devoured by the tribe leader, or being exiled from the tribe and forced to fend for themselves.
However, some Wolgara feel the pull of civility from the outside world. Seeing cities and other settlements of anthro society, occasionally a Wolgara will leave their tribe willingly and attempt to integrate themselves as a citizen of the nation their tribe inhabits. While typically intimidating due to their size and attitude, Wolgara do have a passion for their craft, whatever it may be; and so some settlements welcome them with open arms as hard working allies with greater brawn and innate magical talent than most anthros.
Port cities especially love Wolgara as shipmates for their wind magic, allowing them to sail any which way they please at breakneck pace, provided the Wolgara feels aptly compensated for using their magic as such.
On average, Wolgara reach a staggering 12 feet tall, and have a surprising level of agility considering even an underweight Wolgara has a large potbelly thanks to the anatomy of their bellymaw.
Feel free to ask me for permission to make your own Wolgara, this is a semi-open species. You don’t need money, I just want to make sure people follow the guidelines of my own creation so they stay true to the concept. ^w^
