He was a speed flier, an endurance flier. Strength was not his strong suit. Unladen, he could cross continents effortlessly, with only needing to stop for water once, perhaps twice. Those bombs were too much. Walking with them was easy enough, but flying would be impossible. Just one would throw him off, ruin his balance and his weight. He could struggle to stay on course or, worse, drop it on a friend.

Here is where he belonged, readying the dragons that were seeing the brunt of the action, hoping most of them came back. Ready and itching to carry off the next critical missive home.

As he finished handing off the latest bomb, he could see by the look of the engineers that they had one ready for him. He quickly signaled to another dragon resting below to take his place. He had covered for the dragon for a time to give him some rest from handling bombs while he awaited his own next assignment.

His heart sank when he saw the somber look in their eyes as they handed him the letter. He could feel his feathered crest dip as the horror set in.

This was a death notice.

His friend's name was on it.
