Fun fact. in the middle ages. actors were considered as low as prostitutes in the social order. It's actually due to the romanticist notions of the Victorian age that they're held to such a high regard now.
Also fun fact. for the time period he was alive, Shakespeare was considered 'pop' culture and not well enlightened. To put it in a modern analogy, imagine several hundred years from now people would consider the episodes of the kardashians as high literature.

I think there was a bit of crossover between the professions in some cultures, hence the stigma. Pretty sure Japan had many "entertainers" who practiced arts of both a musical and carnal nature. Wouldn't surprise me if it happened in other parts of the world, to some extent.
And even when there's no overlap, well, people are jerks. =P So, pretending to be someone else for a living might still be regarded as rather scandalous, or at least not as honorable or respectable as manual labor.
