A smallish Merfolk egg in a cave. These types of mermaids typically lay 5-10 eggs at a time, incubating them for 4-6 months. Eggs must be kept in cool water with a current, to oxygenate through their membranes. The parent merpeople are very protective of new eggs but as time passes, and the fetus grow, their interest wanes and the parents swim off for food, eventually not coming back, generally around the fifth month or so.
This one isn't that old, but old enough you can see the tentacle buds as well as the arms forming.
