Pff, melee build.
While it's entirely awesome to go Unarmed and become Kenshiro, or to grab yourself a Bumper Sword and become the Sword that Cleaves Evil, the /true/ Fallout way is to grab the biggest, shootiest, glowiest thing and zap the crap out of it with your Energy Weapons skill!
...Okay, so I really like green glowy Plasma weapons. <3

jeez, you're still in the doc's vault suit? I found some merc gear in the first hour.
... so it only has an armor of one, and sure it's seen better days, but what else would you expect from something off a gecko-torn corpse?
also, have you fully tinkered with the ammo system yet? Is it possible to craft shell casings and the powder charges for the ultimate cap-greedy little bastard?

There are no pet geckos. There is however, a cyborg-dog companion.
The ammo system isn't all that expansive from what I've seen. You can "break down" ammo for parts, like casing, primer, lead, etc... and rebuild it into different types of ammo.
So if you Breakdown a 20-Gague shotgun shell (buckshot), you could rebuild that shell into a slug, which is essentially a really big bullet. More accurate, with less spread.

HA! If you knew your lore you'd know that Fawkes is a Capital Wasteland supermutant. This strain of mutant loses ALL secondary sexual characteristics, which may inclue visible genitalia.

Bonus Random Musing:
So I've taken to hiding in the corner, waiting for someone to walk into the room, turn their back to me, then I brain them with my baseball bat and loot them, rinse, repeat. it seems the NPCs aren't frightened by the pile of naked, head trauma'd bodies in the corner.
