Working on a character design for a project I'm working on which may or may not ever actually get done. I've done lots of little sketches, but I've never actually sat down and DRAWN one of the characters, so this was mostly an attempt at that.
Some anatomy issues, but this is also the first time I've tried to draw a pose from scratch - generally when I'm doing more than just a head I try to find a picture with a post similar to the one I want, and imitate it, but this time, for the challenge, I decided to try it totally dry. But of a mixed result, I like the fact I'm not copying what I see, but it's still a bit off.
Coloring was mostly just a real quick chop-job to see what colors look good on him. I think the gray-blue goes nicely with his hair.
About this character - Currently, he doesn't have a name, but the "working name" I've given him is Ataraxia - mostly so I have some way of identifying my files. He's not strictly "human" per se, but rather part avian. He usually conceals his bird-like traits so as to not alarm people less used to dealing with nonhumans.
The expression I was going for here was a kind of confident & slightly smug, but calm and relaxed at the same time. Not sure how far off it is, I've tweaked his expression probably a dozen times and I think this is the best one.
Hair is intentionally uneven - it comes to just over his left ear, tapering down to a length slightly longer than his right shoulder.
I'm going to have to do some design sketches for his coat alone - it's a specialized design (so he can still fly in it) and is supposed to look like a mixture between Navy formal whites, a pea coat, and a bit of trench coat thrown in for good measure.
The frame around him is mostly a stylistic device - I'm trying to set up something like this for each major character for this project, hopefully I'll have the second one done some time this week.
