Fact about Jarren and Mayra that I think has caused confusion as to why they are still alive without a head XD
The mysterious chemical from an experimental Garlesh engine that was impregnated into their bodies when a species reactor exploded during the Conglomerate's invasion of their city caused the genetic mutation in their bodies that turned them into taurs and hybrids with the Garlesh aliens.
However, it also caused a strange side effect, which consists of a controlled molecular separation present in their necks, making them both capable of separating their heads from their bodies at will, without any damage, pain or hindrance so that they remain alive and functioning properly as if they were still in one piece.
While this is an ability that the other generation 1 zoosapiens also possess in part due to their body segmentation, they lose control of their bodies when disconnecting from them and cannot do other things when disconnecting, requiring the support of someone else to reconnect or another body to regain breathing and all other basic actions except speech, they can only maintain control of their bodies with a remote action nanochip incorporated from generation 2 onwards.
Both Jarren and Mayra are still able to feel everything in both parts and have absolute control over their body, however the control can be changed if they can swap heads and put them in each other's body, feeling and controlling perfectly the other body even though it is not theirs.
The action of separating or reattaching the head is completely linked to the concentration of each one to perform such action, although the head can also separate involuntarily at times when faced with moods such as boredom and surprise, even though at present they both drop involuntarily by distraction, sometimes their bodies move and perform involuntary actions when separated without being able to control them, supposedly by involuntary actions of the subconscious of both, as this happens mostly when both are very relaxed or asleep.
They are still able to breathe and speak, food, oxygen and liquids that are acquired by the head will still flow through the body even if their heads are not joined, which has led to theorizing if the division in their neck also includes a sort of mini portal, but despite analysis no such anomaly has been determined to be present, the only explanation given is of a controllable and stable molecular separation present only in the neck of both.
Jarren likes to use this ability for his own convenience, and since he does not have a mirror he resorts to looking at his own body from this perspective, Mayra uses the ability for the same reason but it is not something she likes to be seen using in public, but they both like to play and joke in this way from time to time, being a curious and unique ability that the pair of taurs possesses and that not only for entertainment and review, but in desperate situations and in combat has been very useful, getting with it quick attacks and agile movements that take their enemies by surprise, and they have become accustomed to it being their ability a part of them, even if with it their head is not on their shoulders all the time.

Glad you liked it!
Although they are two of my main characters I could say that it is a unique case, all other anthropomorphic animals in my universe are modular by having metal connectors on all limbs including the head for a sure process that gives the ability to disassemble and exchange parts.
And how nice that you plan to incorporate something like that, there are always advantages of being modular hehe

At least in my universe it has always been useful because those connectors were created to easily add cybernetic replacements even if the limb had not been permanently lost for different activities and especially physical improvements in combat because the first generation were super soldiers and only used it for that.
I think apart from something similar you could think of something as a medical resource or major link to cybernetic systems.
