This is a creature created for my story, Hunted by Prey. This is a Sherman, a critter that's Sidney describes "about as big as a cat, as jittery as a rat, and sneaky like a fox". These, and a few other more creatures, are the second options the hunters go after for game or food if they can't find any humans.

They come in all colors and different features but this Sherman runs into Ri-Ri many times. He eventually ends up befriending her and becomes her protector and messenger.
