As you may have noticed, lately I've been touching a lot of old bases, almost as though I was just trying to see if I still knew how to draw a lot of characters I like. Perhaps I was. This one is Smurfette, but rather far off model.. and for good reason. The orginal Smurfette is "cute" only in the eye of the beholder. Objectively speaking, she was short, had huge feet and a W.C. Fields' nose. She was also annoyingly self-centered.
I like to imagine that she was about 3 or 3 1/2 feet tall -- rather than 6 inches -- and better proportioned. That would make Smurfs a kind of gnome, I guess. But what can you do with a six inch tall femme fatale? A single smooch would knock them head over heels.
I was tempted to add a couple of lines and make this a "bobble-head."

Well I imagine that since he flunked Wizard's School that he was going by the book on how he made her. Also, interestingly, it's noted that as the series progressed, Gargamel openly declared he no longer cared about eating them or turning them to gold, just wanted to see them annihilated for the endless frustration caused him.
Which, when you come right down to it, is a far more believable reason. I always thought that if Gargamel was hungry, he could find roots and berries to eat, or, if there was no choice, get a job in the nearest village. As for turning Smurfs to gold...he's never caught on long enough to do it. Chopping wood for $1 an hour would likely be more profitable.
But if Gargamel really just wants revenge, why doesn't he start a forest fire? You don't get the impression that he was the brightest bulb in the woods, do you?
