I finally got this texture map after about 30 crashes or so. I hate unwrapping but this is just insane. >_< I could have done a better job but I didn't want to go through another 30. :( This one have to do cause I not going back. Anyone knows a plugin that'll take the pain away? Something that flattens just a selected part of the map to eliminate the overlaps instead of smashing the whole image. I can't believe tools are so fricking primitive. The so-called automatic tools just makes a mess.

3ds Max is like that. Either use another program to map it (I recommend Blender), or simply use it's automatic mapping feature and use a plugin to paint directly onto the surface. Modo (http://www.luxology.com/) is a good seperate program for this. Also, try selecting faces and simply using cylindrical unwrap on cylinder-like objects, and stiching it together later. Finally, turn off turbosmooth before you do this. (I'm assuming you're using it based on how everyhting's curved).
True, although modo 202 works pretty well. I just use max's automatic mapping, and export it to a more universal format. From there it's easy to open in another program that offors drawing directly on the surface. That, or since every other one of the shots you're rendered is close up, build a shader in 3ds max using world or object xyz. That way you won't have to re-texture if you have to make changes. The vertex paint feature is also useful.
